Delayed/Laggy Indicator

Hey guys,

On my 1998 CBR900RR, when i indicate, the indicators don't come on for a certain amount of time, however, once they do come on, they flash at the normal rate.

For example, i push the indicator switch left. Nothing happens for 5 seconds, then it just starts indicating like it normally would. Turns off straight away if i push off. This happens with both left and right indicators. I haven't had a play with the bike while it's parked yet (will do tonight), but i've tried indicating while swerving left and right to see if it's a loose connection or something, and i haven't found anything yet to make me think it's a loose connection that is being triggered once i go over a bump/angle the bike.

Any help guys?

Isaac

Re: Delayed/Laggy Indicator

I'm getting the same issue on my 99 blade. I pulled apart the indicator switch and the contacts were a bit corroded so I cleaned them up some but the issue is still there. Has anyone aside from the 2 of us had this issue and sorted it? I'm thinking I didn't clean the contacts enough but I'd like feedback from others if possible...

Re: Delayed/Laggy Indicator

I've had this issue on my blade for about 2 weeks now, seems to be worse in the cold mornings, sometimes about 10 seconds on left and a max of 5 or 6 on the right, I also checked the switch and it seems clean enough to make contact so I have just come back from the bike shop with a new relay for the indicators, think it may be getting stuck or something.

Will try and fit this tomorrow night or maybe Thursday work permitting and will let you know if that solves the issue if you like.

Dave.

Re: Delayed/Laggy Indicator

Have you tried cleaning the contacts on the flasher relay, or even trying another relay to see if that sorts it.

Thx ...Tingull

Re: Delayed/Laggy Indicator

The relay may have gone... On my sons RXS the lights would come on very slowly and at times just stay on. Its worth a try as the relays cant be anything more than $10 on eBay...

Re: Delayed/Laggy Indicator

I did the full clean out, problem still persists.
I just noticed because i was testing while the bike was off, if i push left, there is nothing for a second, then a few quick clicks then the lights start flashing with the clicks, so i'm guessing it's the relay.

Where is it, how do i replace it, and where is the best place to get one from?

Re: Delayed/Laggy Indicator

I have this problem sometimes on my 03' 954 but not all of the time. I too thought it could be the flasher relay until I was told on the 954 the flasher is controlled in the clocks. Mine seems to happen on damp or wet mornings.

Re: Delayed/Laggy Indicator

Hmmm. Not too sure - have you tried it when idling? Does it do the same?

My flasher on my Hornet is under the rear seat (towards the back light) and has 21W X 4 Bulbs written on it - Maybe you can borrow a friends and test it if someone near you has another 900?

Re: Delayed/Laggy Indicator

Doesn't seem to make any difference if idleing or motoring. I think it is most likely to be water/damp in the switch. Did think it could be a bad earth but everything else seems to be working ok. The indicators seem to work ok when the alarm arms/disarms. Just like the other posts when it plays up there seems to be a delay of 5-10 seconds before they work. Once they have worked they continue for the rest of the journey ok.
When I spoke to the local dealer they said the flasher is controlled digitally in the clocks. "Hope it not that coz thats between £800-1000" They also said that they had not heard of the problem before.

Re: Delayed/Laggy Indicator

Ahh yeah, £800-1000 sounds ok for a new set of clocks - eBay is your best friend

I'm not sure about the indicators being controlled by the clocks, I have a 2003 954 also and just bought a relay from my local dealer.
From the manual it seems to be front left under the front cowling, another thing to know is there are four relays listed and shown on the slide at the shop and they are all the same.
I will have to take them out one by one as trial and error as my indicators don't seem to make that clicking noise.

Still haven't fitted new relay yet as work has been busy, will do at weekend and let you know the result after my first cold morning ride to work.

Re: Delayed/Laggy Indicator

Four relays? There should be one major one (a block with a connector with two pins in it) and the others maybe in-line

Had to replace my Hornet one as the flasher couldn't cope with LEDs - one block and done.

After more careful inspection my indicator relay seems to have the same symptoms, slow to flash first thing on cold/damp mornings (i.e. this morning) and fine after things are warmed up.

On a side note: Where in Perth do you work dam750? I'm in the Perth CBD, parking around the concert hall, coming in from Freo on the Kwinana Fwy each day. I'll look out for a 954 on my way in...

Firstly after stripping my bike down on Sunday to fit the relay I discovered that the shop I went to was wrong and the relay is part of the clocks, after not being able to find this relay with all the fairing off I decided to aquire a manual and it calls the clocks a combination meter but yes it does contain the relay.
The way I see it I now have three choices, buy new clocks even though it's only a problem in the cold morning and it's getting warmer, get them fixed if I can find a clever person or the one I'm considering in to rewire the current indicators and fit a relay, still haven't looked into this yet but I could do this myself and it wouldn't be that expensive.
