How to trace motor VIN number

Is There anyway trace the numbers on my 2002 cbr 954 to determine if it is the org. motor. I was told when I bought it that it had a newer (lower milage) in it.

Re: How to trace motor VIN number

Not that I'm aware of unless you can find the original registration papers with the original engine number on them.

Re: How to trace motor VIN number

Shouldnt the motor be associated with the frame VIN?

Re: How to trace motor VIN number

Not as far as I'm aware.
The factory _might_ note which engine went into which frame as part of their quality control but there's no connection between the numbers.
The engines are made and numbered in the engine facility and the frames in the frame facility then brought together and assembled.

Re: How to trace motor VIN number

I thought that they made note of it when the bike was shipped and recieved, then sold to the consumer.

Re: How to trace motor VIN number

I would think any conscientious distributor would do that but I don't know that there's a legal requirement to do so.

Re: How to trace motor VIN number

i was under the impression that the motor number is only linked to the motor, i had an issue with a 954 i purchased , that is why i now have the 04 1k, but the numbers on the engine could only be traced to it, noting the year and engine size, and of course it was from a different year 954...so given my experience you can find out the year model and engine size from honda engine numbers, now new harley's and some other bikes have the VIN as the engine number so that they can be matched....just my

Re: How to trace motor VIN number

The first part of the VIN/engine number tells you the model and engine size - the 929 is SC44 and the 954 is SC50. If it's a californian model there should be a 1 after the model code in the VIN only. Or 0 if it's a 49'er.
If the first two digits of the the engine number are 20 then it's an '02 954. If 21 then it's an '03' engine.
I don't think you can narrow it down further than that without the original registration papers unless Honda make notes of VIN/engine numbers during importation.
