Carbon fiber exhaust

Does anybody know what kind of resin is used to make a carbon fiber end can? I tried to research on the web and can't find an answer. It would have to withstand pretty high temp. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Carbon fiber exhaust

Are you trying to make your own carbon exhaust? Repair one? Talk to the people at Fiberglass , Epoxy , Composites, Carbon Fiber - U.S. Composites, Inc.. If you've never worked with fiberglass, I'd practice with that for economic and health reasons. The sanding dust is really bad for your lungs and carbon splinters like to come out the other side of your hand in a few years.

There's a lot of tricks to working with composites and making them structurally sound as well as look good. Buy a few books and read them twice. FOLLOW THE EPOXY RESIN INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER.

You might make the can from fiberglass and put a layer of carbon over top for looks. Also line the inner diameter of the can with exhaust packing for insulation from the heat.

Re: Carbon fiber exhaust

Yeah I am thinking of making my own. I want one that tucks neatly under the engine and emerges just behind the right peg. I have a friend who works a lot with carbon fiber making custom molded speed skates, so I have great help. Thanks for the link, I'll see what they say.

Re: Carbon fiber exhaust

That looks great. What kind of can is that? Did you shorten one, or build you own? How/where did you attach it to the header. Sounds pretty fierce too. I was actually thinking of a curved pipe, that would kind of resemble a gsxr pipe.

Re: Carbon fiber exhaust

Don't know how savy you are, but if you could TIG weld then I'd try and find a stock gsxr take-off and cut it to fit. Personally I'm a big fan of stock parts as they usually have better materials and coatings that don't corrode/rust/crack.
