My Bike Won't Start, HELP!!

2005 CBR 1000RR black and grey...all stock, i go out yesterday and it won't start...no mods, all fuses ok, fuel pump runs and pressurizes...turn the key and it just turns over and over and over...kill switch at handle bar (throttle side) is in the RUN state.

I had let it sit while it was cold out and started it once every two weeks...let it warm up to 140...started without fail every time.

last time i started it was a week ago. Warm day over the weekend and wanted to go for a rip...and was very dissapointed.

Hi Cameronward,

Does the engine turn over? I had an issue where stator (alternator) had died which is a very common issue with our bikes. Once the battery gets near flat it wouldn't start it would just make clicking noises.

If that is the case charging the battery would get you to a mechanic...

yes, it turns over and over, just won't run. i killed the battery after about 4 times trying to start it over two days....so i jumped it off of my vehicle and then it turned over and over and over....starter works great, just won't fire up. Spark plugs maybe????

Re: My Bike Won't Start, HELP!!

Well, sound like either no fuel or no spark as the engine is turning over..

Fuel - is there fuel being delivered? This involves a couple of things (like, is there gas in the tank?!), but more specifically, check for crimped fuel lines, check if the fuel pump is operating, clogged fuel filter, faulty injector(s), etc. There are some relays involved, so those will need a look/test, too.

If fuel is flowing, then check if you've got spark. Pull the plugs and examine them: If they're wet, you know fuel is getting into the cylinders. If no spark, you need to examine the ignition system - and there's quite a number of other things involved if this is the issue..

Hopefully you've got a service manual! Good luck!

Well, I don't have a manual...i guess i'll buy one of those when i go to have the battery load tested today.

There is a half tank of fuel...i haven't checked the plugs yet.

Could the plugs get fouled by warming it up and then shutting it off?

Was like brand new until the other day, it just wouldn't start.

This is like nothing i've ever heard or seen...well, one time i had a rat living in my ZX10R over the winter...storing dog food and eating wires...

perplexed here.

Plugs could - and that's a pretty easy check.. If they're dry, you know no fuel; wet, fuel and no spark.

Re: My Bike Won't Start, HELP!!

get a haynes manual!, very useful indeed. i have a similar problem at the mo, had the tank off to replace the plugs and airfilter, she ran for a few minutes after i done the work, then died. wont start now!, she turns over and i get one 'umph' which is probably the fuel burning but then thats it, no starting. im wondering do i need to some how prime the fuel system or is rfeconnecting the disconnected hoses, and turning the fuel flow back on simply enough to refill the lines?

The irridium plugs will foul if you are doing short trips. They need to be run for some time to burn off deposits. Unfortunatlly on the 1000rr they are not quick to get to. Lower part of the air box needs to come out.

Re: My Bike Won't Start, HELP!!

yeah, that's what i am thinking... guess i need to get busy getting to the plugs. i can smell fuel at the end of the tail pipe after i try and start it; so it's gotta be an ignition problem. thanks!

Re: My Bike Won't Start, HELP!!

my guess is the plugs are fouled.

im not a fan of starting a bike every week etc and running it for 5-10 mins then switch off and leave it.

this fouls the plugs and after a while you cant get a decent spark.

clean them or better still replace them as there a pain to get too.
