Help the new guy fix his bike!

Hello all. I've got an 07 1000rr and managed to lay it down a a couple weeks ago. Pretty lame I know. I'm in the process of fixing it and one of the things I need to replace is the Lower triple tree. I've got it torn down all the way to what looks like a car axle nut on top of the assembly.

I took a picture but you can't really see it, I can take another if need be. This nut has 4 notches in it and as far as I can tell should just spin off. But when I start to remove it, threads from the stem start to peel up and it comes off pretty tight. It feels like its cross threaded but I don't see how that can be since I bought the bike with .9 miles on it. So to anybody who has pulled this apart,

Is this normal? Should I just keep going and take it off? Or is there something I'm missing. Thanks

-wr-ecks

Re: Help the new guy fix his bike!

Nope. Maybe I should get one?? I'm fairly mechanically inclined and a auto mechanic by trade so I don't think I'm missing anything. I probably should just force it and see what happens

It's just going to be a week or so before I even have the new one so I figure while I'm waiting I'd ask. Maybe if somebody here has a manual and they have nothing to do for a few min. they could take a look for me??

Found a thread on another forum where the guy said its kinda tough to get it off without using the honda socket and tapping it with a screwdriver like I am. Must be all it is.

Re: Help the new guy fix his bike!

Oh quite a bit. So far here is my list of broken parts-

left fork cracked
clutch lever broke.
shifter end piece broke off.
lower triple tree just bent enough the new left fork won't go in without forcing it.
broke the clutch reservoir
All the plastics are pretty much toast.

I've fixed the lever and shifter already. was going to put in the new fork today but as It went in I noticed the lower triple tree was bent. You can look at the weld across the front of it, on the right side its perfectly straight where on the left its slightly curved in one spot. I'm half tempted to just pull it out and try to bend it back its so slight.

I found a used one online for 135$ though so I'll probably just order that.

Yea You wouldnt think so, but there is nothing else there. Maybe it was installed crappy from the factory? If I ruin the threads its not really a big deal if Im putting a new one in I guess.

Re: Help the new guy fix his bike!

Well I forced it off. That thing was a B*TCH!! Ended up having to use the air chisel to get it off. Hitting a punch with a hammer wasn't enough.

The threads on it were trashed. I guess it was cross threaded when it was installed? Seems to me like that wouldn't be a common thing with those Japanese robots putting these together. Weird. Oh well, got to replace it anyways. Thanks for your input.

Cool. I might use that and confuse somebody

I got another question for you guys, It looks as if the right fork is very slightly bent as well. Its barely noticeable but I can tell it is.

Do you think I would have to replace it as well? I wish I wouldve noticed it and the lower triple before so I could've bought a whole front end but too late now. I think it will all bolt in but Im worried it will veer one way or the other.

Well It wasnt until I pulled it out and really examined it that I could tell it was bent. Is having a bent fork rideable? Thats what I dont know. I have limited experience with Motorcycles, much less crashed ones.

Change it up, it will affect the handling of the bike at different speeds

Depends on where and how much it's bent. If it moves smoothly throughout the full stroke it's probably okay. You can try turning the tube so the bend is across the bike so the axle is perpendicular to the steering head. Clamps can be straightened but are _very_ tough so you need a press or some long bars and ideally a damaged fork tube to bolt into the clamp to use as a lever.

Thats kinda what I was thinking on the bent fork. Its up closer to the top and although I can only push the shaft so far in with my own weight seems to feel identical to the good fork I have. The adjusters seem to adjust freely, I noticed on the cracked fork the top adjuster wouldnt budge. I'ts pretty easy to swap out a fork, I think Ill run it and see. If It feels the least bit strange Ill order one. Or if I happen to come across another really good deal like I did the left Ill get one.

I tried like hell to bend the clamp back. I used a 4 foot crow bar on it and used all of my 215 lbs. to try to bend it and couldn't budge it an inch. I didnt want to try too hard and bend something else, Thats why I started to remove it. I was thinking I could put it in the vise and give it another try but thats when I found out the top of the stem was fubar'ed. (I wonder If I wrecked it by trying to bend it? who knows..) I figured that was fates way of saying quit being cheap and buy another one.

Ordered it last night from Simpson cycles. I've had pretty good luck with them so far, If anybody happens to be looking for used parts they've been pretty good to me.

Thanks for the advice so far, I like this forum so far. The big Subaru forum where I usually roam around on is full of punk kids who do nothing but talk smack from their parents computers.

You must remove it from the frame. It requires so much force that you don't want to be putting that force into the steering stem, frame or steering head. I straightened some 1000RR clamps a couple of years ago by bolting a steel frame to a concrete floor to hold it down with two damaged fork tubes bolted into the clamp. Two steel tubes about eight feet long slipped over the fork tubes and I was standing on the top one with over 100kg. You are _only_ bending one side of the clamp against the other. Do not put _any_ force at all into the stem. Using a 2400mm lever to turn a 30mm lever with 100kg at the end equates to about 80:1 or about _eight tons_ of pressure - aluminium is _very_ strong.

Well good thing I didnt try any harder eh?

Re: Help the new guy fix his bike!

Ok. If anybody is still watching, The bike now supports its own weight again. Got the whole front end back together this morning. Friday I should have the money for the fairings and will be ordering those. The bike will be a kind of burnt orange color and all the lowers will be black. I think it will look cool.

Nows the time to modify the CBR... everything is nice and open (I never thought of buying a set of cans whilst I was re-building the Hornet - now shes all boxed up and I have a set of scorpions ready to be fitted.

Keep up the good work!

LOL. I don't think the wife will let me spend any more money on it. A few weeks ago when I bought it I had just spent a bunch of money on my car for rallyin. I had to buy her a couch so she'd let me fix the bike.

I just ordered an aftermarket fairing kit for the bike. The company has good reviews and I can't find anything really bad said about them so we'll see how it goes. I'd be lying if I wasn't a little nervous that they are going to send me a pile of crap but like I said we'll see.

Re: Help the new guy fix his bike!

wow man. Seems like things aren't going too bad for you. Nice job on the rebuild! That's like less downtime than a dealership + waiting for the insurance check!

What kind of manual did you get? Just the standard one that comes with the bike? Or is there a bigger one with lots of pictures & stuff?
