Re: what is best stuff for cracked fairings

i have done fiberglass mats on the back side of my cracks, if you have the time and patience to mess with it.....as for the tabs, i dont know what to tell ya..sorry......if i was more experienced in the "glass" i guess one could custom fabricate metal tabs then form them into the fiberglass......i dunno.....

I repaired a couple of cracks using a flattened soldering iron, melt the plastics bag together, sand and bondo. I painted it gloss black and its impossible to find where the crack was.

tabs are a bit harder, look for other broken fairings and bond the tabs on?

Re: what is best stuff for cracked fairings

Repairing with a large gauge soldering iron is a good way to deal with say a split or a crack upto a reasonable size, i have put back together lots of 900rr 929 and 954 fairings using both Plastex and Plast-aid too.

Plast-aid.com for USA and Plast-aid plastic repair kit glue ABS PVC fix acrylic panels fairings for europe you can add paint colouring like professional paint powders or acrylic paint (good quality artist stuff) Ive managed to repair fairings at home as good as any professional (with some practice)

if you have broken tabs i have a neat trick if anyone is interested?

buy up some broken fairings and cut the luggs off them for use on your stuff.

if anyone here in the uk has broken 900rr fairings would love to have any left overs or stuff your not repairing.

Matt

Ha, I just noticed the OP was from 2010, I gotta start checking dates when people revive these old threads. Oh well, I'll leave this up anyway in case it helps someone.

Re: what is best stuff for cracked fairings

The fibreglass kits on Ebay are great, 10 to do tons, easy as well, and a solid fix for cracks and broken lugs.

Nice pics Jon. What kind of heat gun is that? Is it specifically for plastic welding? Looks like it has a built in air motor, I assume it comes with different size tips as well? I think I like the pistol grip better than the Harbor Freight one I posted the link to.

Plastic Welding Kit

I was taking the pictures while my friend did the plastic welding. Don't know much about the heat gun but it had a wide heat range. The plastic rod was abs, like you mentioned. It's kind of like tig welding, but easier.
It held great too, never a sign of cracking. I crashed that front piece a couple years later. Ooops...
