Re: KNN air filter?

Anyone put a KNN air filter in a 2000 929? Good idea or bad idea?

Re: KNN air filter?

You can put a K&N filter on the bike no problem. You only loose about one horse power.

Re: KNN air filter?

Plus you get to spend like an hour and half cleaning it every service. I find my time is better spent on plopping in new factory elemement than spending so much time futzing with a product that costs you power (and probably some engine longevity - on K&N vehicles I've had in the past there is often a fine dust in the intake aft of the filter.

Re: KNN air filter?

Great, just frigging great to hear this after running a K&N in my Tacoma for the past 2-3 years . I had always heard they were the 'shiznit', but now I'm not so sure. Maybe they are OK (acceptable) on a cage? Probably not .Seems to me though that they would save money in the long run if one keeps up on maintenance (cleaning, re-oiling). Should I go back to stock Toyota air filters?

(Sorry, semi-jacking a thread again).

Re: KNN air filter?

I've had a K&N in my 929 for about 6 months now. No probs.
Cleaning it doesn't really take that long.
Just spray the cleaner, rinse with water and air dry (I usually detail the bike, or change oil while it's drying).
Spray light coat of K&N oil, and it's fine.

(Don't even notice any loss in HP either-like anyone would)

Re: KNN air filter?

Id put a K&N in if we had conical airboxes/filters. But whereas its a flatpanel, its not on the 'to do' list of any of my vehicles.

Re: KNN air filter?

The bike came with the filter on the side. Been reluctant to put it in though--I've heard you can lose a horse or two. Think I'll leave it out. Thanks guys.(and gals)

Re: KNN air filter?

I'm running a K&N. I guess I've had it in there for 25k miles or so. I didn't notice any power loss. I suppose if I were racing, I would be more worried about any small power loss, but for street riding, I don't think there's any issue at all.

There is nothing wrong with the stock filter. The issue for me though, is a cost one. I don't want to be buying filters every few months.

Re: KNN air filter?

I put a K&N in my 2000 shortly after I bought it. I did not notice any horsepower drop, but I have heard that the stock Honda filter flows more air. I had my bike dynoed recently at the Superbike race at Road America and the technician told me that the only reason he suggests a K&N is that the filter is permanent, not for performance reasons.

Something to think about.

Check your intake tract aft of the filter. *In both my Diesel and my Jeep I found some fine dust. NOT what I wanted to see. *Never had any oiling problems but I also never noticed this with the stock paper filter.

Take a look. *If your intake is clean.. then you probably don't have anything to sweat. *Personally, I'll stick with the stock stuff. *

Of course that does not even address possible airbox resenonse issues that the K&N might cause. *The box was designed to flow a certain way with the stock engine.. chaning the engine, filter, etc changes the way the airbox works. *Using the K&N might be to you benefit but then again it might not. *More air-flow is not the be-all/end-all. *Extra turbulance it the airbox can rob power no matter how much air you stuff in there.

EDIT:
On a side note I was surprised to find that the Duc uses a foam-oil fitler (a pair of them actually) in the fresh-air ducts. Strange design.. but then everything on the bike is different that what I am used to on my pervious rice-burners.
