| Painted my VFR! I had dropped this poor 1992 viffer so many times due to SLS* that I wasn't even getting mad anymore.
I dropped that sucker in my driveway, in my garage, by the side of the road, at several gas stations, in a friend's driveway, learning how to do U turns, and the most memorable, at the inspection station going into Canada, to the enthusiastic applause of my countrymen...
Note the broken tail fairing behind the bolt, lots of scratches, scrapes and scars.
So I decided that I'd take a break from my night school project; restoring my wife's '72 VW bug (bag of walnuts that it is..) and get this bike re-done.
It has about 30 parts to disassemble-reassemble, versus the 954RR's Five..
Metal finished the dents in the lowers, fiberglassed the wounded plastic, Did a radical fenderectomy, mixed up some Porsche paint with extra pearl and aluminum, ordered custom decals from BDA116 and worked my ass off.
Whatcha think?

| Re: Painted my VFR! Thanks !
ND4, I have been taking restoration and auto painting classes. I did it, with a lot of expensive equipment..
Maxib - the original RR is working fine. I keep reminding it that I have a new, finned, pentium fan cooled spare in the tail, ready to go.
Hamburgler - I'm wondering how hard it would be to weld up an undertail pipe..
But the next project is painting my X11 ! (Semester's almost over, Y'know. ) |

| Re: Painted my VFR! Your screen wins ! Though if I've come across a color police can't identify, I think I've succeeded !
I looked through a bunch of paint chip samples and settled on Porsche-Audi-VW group paint. I chose a very dark blue "Aquablau Mica" with 3 separate shades of pearl; White, blue, and violet. Then I added some more - figuring what the hell? I've seen some boxsters in this color.
It sparks up in the sun so that the highlights are several values lighter than the shadowed areas. On a faired motorcycle with a lot of contours, it looks very nice.
The Silver is also a porsche "Titangrau Metallic" shade, and I substituted a coaarser grade of aluminum flake in the mixture.
BDA made me a set of medium silver wings for the tank, which are under the clearcoat. I'm hoping he can make an 'old school' style wing for the tail, like I had on my '67 CB160 tank badge.
Blue VFR's are almost nonexistent in the US, though I've seen Canadian and european ones

Alot of of both the viffers and the XX's are blue up here. I really like the original blue color on those bikes, but the one you mixed looks just as good When I crash my 929(knock on wood) , I hope I can paint it in the RC30 scheme... If I had the cash, I'd buy a good RC30 just to look at in my living room.. |

| Re: Painted my VFR! Resurrecting this thread rather than start a new one. I am repainting my bike and haven't had problems with the plastics yet, but am gonna start on the tank next week hopefully.
What do I need to coat the paint with to make sure spilled gas doesn't eat it?
And also did you clearcoat the fairings? Thanks. |

I used a PPG Basecoat & a compatible clearcoat on both the fairings and the tank. It will certainly protect against momentary gas spills, though I bet after you put in the hours to get it right, you won't be spilling anything on it.
So make sure the clearcoat you choose is compatible with the underlying paint, and all should be well. |
