Help me reinstall my VFR carbs

I'm got the carbs back from the shop and I'm trying to install them but I'm finding it almost impossible on this horrid V4 system.

The VFR has these rubber collars that hold the carbs to the head. I've figured out which way is up and how they need to be aligned to the cutouts match up where they need to.

The problem is that while I can attach the collars to the carbs or to the heads I can't do both. I should have figured that this would be a nighmare since they were next to impossible to get off in the first place

I imagine that I need to partially place the collars on the head with the holes facing up and not fully seated. Then I should set the carb on top and press down to fully seat the collars on the head while seating them on the carbs too. Unfortunately this isn't working as smoothly as I imagined it would. I can't seat them by hand or by sitting on it. I've tried to hammer them on and also ratching them on but to no avail. I MAY need to replace the collars but I don't think so since they are still pliable and have no signs of cracking.

I can't reference my service manual since it's currently buried somewhere in a storage locker but I think it would probably say "Attach the carb and tighten collars" or something equally unhelpful. Is there some sort of trick to installing these things or should I just try and gorilla the damn things in??

Re: Help me reinstall my VFR carbs

Yes Armorall or WD40 to lubricate the collars. Maybe even KY . I did this on my 96 a couple of years ago. I did it with the carbs assembled into a unit and from memory seated all the collars in their final positions on the carbs and then fitted the carbs to the rear bank of cylinders first. I was able to bend the lips of the front collars enough to muscle them on. The VFR list would have more info on this. I didn't need to use a hammer to get them on although I used a prybar with a protective wooden pad against the rocker cover to get them off.

I wrote up the procedure for the OZVFR list. I'll see if I can find it.

Couldn't find it but on reflection I think I fitted the front collars to the cylinder stubs and the rear collars to the carbies. I then put the rear collars on the cylinders and muscled the carbies into the front collars.

A light coat of Vasoline works too.

Re: Help me reinstall my VFR carbs

Thanks everyone. Ended up that equal amounts of WD40 and cussing was the remedy. Of couse as per my standard luck another bump in the road has come up. Missing hoses, ah, things keep looking up.

More problems
