I know it makes "absolutely" no sense...but I have a hankering to build a V4 track bike....
I'd like to do a 94-7...but I like the FI on the 800, and I have a smoking deal lined up on a donor bike. The biggest hangup is the integrated rearsets...but I think I can whittle out a new set without too much trouble....

The biggest hangup is the integrated rearsets...but I think I can whittle out a new set without too much trouble.... | There were a lot of advantages with the earlier models, including the 5.5" rim designed to carry a 180 tire with adequate swingarm clearance to shorten the wheelbase by running a short chain. I ended up making extension arms for the rearsets, a rear subframe to fit the tail section and had a new shock link machined that was based on the late 90' RC30 ratio. Stig Pettersson (PPS) did the forks and Bob Favorite at Fox did the shock. Tom Kipp Sr. made up a couple of sets of 14 to 1 pistons that Rick Tomzcik hand cut to match the GSXR1100 valves we installed (and modified the head to match). The crank was balanced with the rods and pistons as a unit. Superbike Mike did the porting and redid the intakes to match a set of TTF1 magnesium 40mm carbs I found in England. The only thing I never got together was a custom ECU that would let the bike rev a couple thou higher, as the bike was making serious power right into the limiter and with the crank work etc., it could have handled 14K without much problem.
Almost forgot: I 86'd the stock oil cooler and replaced it with a 10 row Earl's unit that kept the motor down in the useable temp range. The stock radiator and oil cooler were definitely not up to the task.

| Re: By request . . . Did you shorten the wheelbase by flipping the eccentric, or did you have to do swingarm work?
Those engine mods sound tasty...
I'm thinking more along the lines of a standard 840 build...should be plenty of power for a track day fun machine...
What kind of dry weight were you able to hit?
I'm a bit concerned about being able to shed any significant weight using an 800...
Edit:
Glad you brought up cooling...I don't think I want to stick with the side mount rads....would rather have a setup like the RC45...thoughts?

The machine weighed 390 with a full tank of gas when I finished with it. The first 80 pounds were cake (exhaust, front & rear subframes, bodywork etc.). The last 15 were a lot harder (magnesium carbs, turned down forks, smaller battery, 520 chain, TZ rad to replace the stocker, TI axle and various nuts and bolts etc.).
You may find the 800 motor easier to mod, as you can mill the heads with a chain driven cam setup. The RC30s can be milled if you shim the cams, but the 180 degree VFR has zero clearance tolerance which precludes shimming the cams to compensate for a lower deck height (thus the custom pistons). |

| Re: By request . . . Damn...390 sounds nice...
The 800 has gears, so probably won't do any milling...if I do any motor work at all, I'll just send it to DynamoHumm for an 870 kit.....
