929/954 shock install on a VFR

Hey, I promised BakeTech I'd post this up when I got the install done.

http://www.vfrdiscussion.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=17268

Benefit of going to a 929/954 shock is that you gain compression damping adjustment plus the external reservoir. Easily worth the 10-20 bucks that one can find an EBAY CBR shock for.

Certainly not up to Ohlins standards in terms of quality, but about $980.00 cheaper too.

BTW, the 929 shock is the better candidate in terms of fitment (remote reservior facing the other way) and spring rate (same as the VFR).

In case anyone is wondering, the shorter shock does not really limit your rear wheel travel as the shock stroke length is practically the same, just the shock body itself that's shorter. 57mm stroke for the CBR bits Vs. 58mm for the VFR shock. So you might lose like ~2mm of rear wheel travel when you factor in the linkage ratio, no big deal for casual street riding.

I haven't been able to road test it what with all the snow and ice blanketing the earth hereabouts, but I still have the stock shock to revert to if it doesn't work as intended. No permanent mods to the bike itself, so it's certainly possible to change in the future.

Did I mention it was cheap?

Cool!

Wonder if it would work on my '92?

Well, according to the Racetech website, your '92 has a 16kg/mm spring and a 929 shock has a 15.3kg/mm spring.

To convert KG/MM to LBS/IN. multiply KG/MM by 55.8

So that's 893 Lb spring for the '92 and 854 for the 929. 4.3% lighter spring.

If you're not a heavy guy, and there's room for the reservoir, it just might work.

Does the '92 shock have two eyes, or is it an eye and a fork?

You might look for another recent model Honda S/B shock with a spring rate close to 16kg/mm and the same arrangement as yours, eye/eye or eye/fork.

Oh, and Lindemann has replacement shock springs for 100 bucks in practically any rate you desire. Pushes the total up to ~$120, but still far cheaper than a Penske/WP/Elka/Ohlins/Hyperpro.........
