'86 VFR 750F Alternator/Crankcase Covers....

Does anyone here know what kind of coating is stock on the Alternator and Right Side Crankcase Covers for an '86 VFR 750F? It seems to be some sort of "sand coating"? A few years ago a dealer had simply painted one side a brown color and the other side is starting to peel. Was wondering if anyone did this kind of work anymore, or if any of ya'll had any input.

Thanks

In the day it was called "sand cast paint" and was meant to make the aluminum cases look like the mag ones on the racers...

If you have one that looks brown and isn't paint, it's worthless....call me and I will dispose of it for you...

Well, aren't you helpful?

Unfortunately, I'm not much more help, but at least I'm not an like that Baketech guy

I don't know if anyone does that sand cast stuff anymore, might be able to find it on a websearch. Might be able to get a powdercoat to look similar.

Good luck, those are cool bikes, I like to see them put back together

My reply was actually serious, as that's what Honda called it when I rebuilt one years ago. Searched the web, but couldn't find it... PM sent with a possible resource...

But only half there

I figured you might actually know how they did it, you seem to like to understand that stuff, and have done some crazy things before.

I did a quick Google on faux magnesium coatings and came up with this site. Looks like it covers everything, you might get lucky here.
Engine coatings, paint, and plating phops

Good luck.

LOL....

Good luck with the search Ben, I got it at the Honda dealer, but they had a hard time finding it, and that was in the late 80's....

Guys like GT and BC probly have cans of it stashed in their garage from past projects, but the old codgers have forgotten where they put it...

If I had it, I'd never be able to find it, not in my garage and basement

I do know a restorer of that vintage in NY, but he usually finds good replacement parts instead of doing any heavy refinishing. Not sure he'd know where to get it.

There is also a vintage VFR list if you haven't checked there yet. This might be the link:
vfrlist : 1986 and 1987 Honda VFR 700 -750 Motorcycle discussion mailing list.

I haven't found anything that's an exact match for the '86 covers (cam covers are also the same finish), but mine could stand to be redone at some point. The engine covers aren't too bad, but the cam covers have seen better days. I'll start looking around at some powdercoating places, see if I can find anything.

I agree.... my cam covers are worse at peeling. My Alternator cover was actually painted by a dealer in '98. So that one needs to be completely redone, and my Crankcase Cover has some road rash on it, ever so slight, but would love to get it perfect again.......

Sorry, I just need to jump in here.
Your bike is a 86 VFR 750 and you have the dirty brown looking valve covers and Clutch cover and stator? Do you have the full frame work that comes down along the sides of the motor OR is there a break in the frame and the motor looks like it's going to fall out?

The upper arm of the frame goes along side the motor and attaches at the rear. There is also an arm that goes in front of the motor and attaches there, just behind the radiator. There is nothing below the motor except the exhaust.
