| Re: Suggestions on the best year VFR to purchase I know this is an old thread and all but here goes,
I’m thinking about going the same route as bikerboy1974 in the sense that my 954 is an awesome bike but I really enjoy doing 600-1000km day trips with the 954, which are doable but not the most enjoyable! And since I want to start doing track days I thought I would turn the 954 into a track only bike (I was thinking about selling it and getting a 600 which would be ideal but with just over 30,000KM I don’t think I would get much for it) and look at getting a VFR for everyday riding. What do you guys think about this deal? Auto Trader Canada | Truck Trader Canada | Boat Trader Canada | RV Trader Canada
Are there any other bikes I should consider besides the VFR? The VFR has everything I need minus the VTEC! |

| Re: Suggestions on the best year VFR to purchase Have any of you '98 - '01 VFR owners added a HI-mount exhaust? I can understand the disspleasure with the VTEC, but isn't that Dual undertail exhaust just so SEXY???
I am starting to surf through some forums/sites to see what HI-mount systems are available for a '98 and are they all single or can you go dual??? |

My son has commented on how the ride for the passenger is so comfortable. The bike isnt too jerky so he doesnt really have to worry about sliding off, but he says that it is the softest and most comfortable bike i own. He usually gets cramps and a numb bum, but on the VFR this doesnt happen (except after 2 hours of riding)
I picked it up for £400, yes £400.00 GBP, put a mirror on it, glued here and there, mini service and the bike its ready. It has done abouit 20,000 miles and is still going strong! It is such and enjoyable bike to ride. |

I bought a 2002 a few years back because it happened to be available when I went to Dallas to buy a K1200RS at Auction and decided to pass on it. I was surprised by the linked brakes,.....had had them on a 2002 BMW R1150RT and hated them,....they worked well on the VFR,....liked the look of the underseat exhaust and loved the sound after I gutted the cannisters. But I never got used to the Angry Asian Insect look of the front and hated the VTEC......I tried entering corners in different gears so that I would not cross the 7000 threshold when accelerating out of the corner...........just took too much thought............trying to determine what gear to be in for smooth exit.........finally decided to dump it..............and bought an immaculate 95 that so far I have enjoyed...........gutted the muffler on it as well and that has released the beast within........(at least the soundtrack of one....performance is unchanged)

Are you saying that the 2001 5th generation changed to an underseat exhaust for the final year of that generation or are you just referring to the Vtec 6th generation bikes..........please clarify.
If there is a 5th generation bike with factory underseat exhaust,.....Im on the hunt.

I wonder if anyone has converted their 98-01 VFR to have an underseat exhaust? Ive seen it done to a 954RR, but hat was when i was in florida. |

| Re: Suggestions on the best year VFR to purchase Hello I have owned a vfr750fv 97 model for the last 2 years & can honestly say its been the best allround bike I have ever owned, Ive owned over a 100 bikes, Also I was a dealer for some time so rode nearly everything up to 2001. I would sugest you go for the latest best condition, lowest mileage vfr750 you can find, if not an early 800, personally I would go for anouther 750 the best engine ever built. Good luck Mark |

There are a number of different undertail exhaust designs on display on sites like VFRdiscussion.com and VFRworld.com and if you're lucky, you might be able to find a Wolf undertail exhaust system, which is pretty much a bolt-on install. But they're very rare, since from what I understand they only made like 500 or so of them.
Now, as far as the VFR goes, I love my 99. Over the years, I've had a CBR600F3, and F4i, a 929, a 954, and even an '05 Gixxer 600. I've sold all of them except the 954, which I've only had a few months, and the VFR, which I've had going on 8 years now.
Around here, everyone I hang out with makes fun of it. They laugh at it's looks and how much it weighs. They call it the boat, the tank, the cadillac, the Goldwing with an identity crisis, etc. Even after they sit on it and lean it back and forth, the most credit they give it is that it "holds it's weight really well." Then we hit the twisties around here, and when they find I'm right on their ass the whole way, without ever shifting lower than 5th gear, they shut up for a couple of days.
Honestly, it's my favorite bike by far. It does everything extremely well, without being limited to any one extreme. I even know a guy around here who takes his completely stock to the track and beats the crap out of people on 600s and 750s.
I live in Sacramento, CA, and I've ridden it all the way to King of Prussia, PA in less than a week, without any problems. When I ride it down to LA, the only stops I ever have to make are for food, gas, and to use the bathroom. There is no such thing as a "let me stop so I can stretch and relax a bit" rest stop.
As far as the best model, I say the 98-99 because they don't have the added weight of the catalytic converter that came on the 2000/2001 model, and they have that wonderful cam gear whine still.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. |

| Re: Suggestions on the best year VFR to purchase Yes, the only thing to watch out for, on pretty much all the 5th gens, and some of the 6th gens, is the voltage regulator. It's mounted in a very crappy location, on the left hand side of the tail section under the plastic, and doesn't get any airflow worth mentioning. As such, it gets very hot very quickly and can fail over time. I've heard that Honda came out with an improved one a few years back to replace it, but you can also get a good quality regulator from Electrosport for almost half the price. |
