1983 Interceptor Engine

I have a 83 interceptor engine, and have a question. Do the guages and instrument panels need to be connected for it to start(9 pin connectors)? Also, does anyone know if the ignition assembly was rewired from 1983 to 1986?

No, it can start without them, I suppose, as long as the mechanical/electric sensor connection to the starter relay for "neutral" is functional, and it actually "will" start. I have seen them on an engine dyno, with a rudimentary computer interface, so: sure.

Yes, as there were subtle updates to that engine, used in more than just the interceptor.

Re: 1983 Interceptor Engine

I have been trying for quite a while to get this to turn over with the wiring harness. The engine didn't come with the ignition assembly, so I bought one off a 1986 thinking they wouldn't have changed anything. Can anyone give me an xplanation or digram telling me how to wire the ignition?

I would by the clymer manuals, as you probably have lots of work to do with it.

82-85 will interchange. 86-88 will interchange.
You will have to do some mod's to get it to work from a 83 to 86.....

Re: 1983 Interceptor Engine

Do you know what the mod would be? I'm a little short on cash right now and can't get a Clymer. I'm trying to do this on a college student budget.
