| Re: Piston ring change Alright, I've come upon another problem. I'm trying to get the clutch nut off and it just won't come loose. Something turns when I rotate it counterclockwise (the clutch gear and primary drive gears are locked), but it never advances on the threads. Does the engine have to be in gear to get the nut off? And if it does, how do I get it in gear after it's out of the frame? |

| Re: Piston ring change Are you using in impact? You can put it in gear by grabbing hold this the shift shaft with vise grips (be very carefull not to damage the splines, use a rag bteween it and the vise grip). I'm with sinful consult a manual on what recommended procedure is. |

| Re: Piston ring change I have the service manual, that is what has gotten me this far. I have been using an impact socket and a 20" breaker bar for all of the work I have been doing. The manual simply says to remove the clutch nut and lock washer. They don't explain how, so I assume it's simple. |

| Re: Piston ring change Any engine I have worked on, once the clutch gear is locked it should just screw off. The outer clutch and gear is splined to the shaft the nut is on. It shouldn't just spin. Were you able to get it in gear, if so does the output shaft (where the sprocket goes) spin when you try and remove the nut? |

| To get what to turn? If you are talking about the clutch nut it is quite a lot, it shouldn't take much to put it in gear. |

| Re: Piston ring change That is the easiest thing to do . If you use a breaker bar put pressure on the nut and hit the breaker bar with a hammer it generaly works better this way. Soak it down with pb blaster and try a little heat if no impact is available. I recommend the impact. it'll get it right off there. |

I'm just going to go buy an impact wrench tonight. We'll see if that loosens it. |

| Re: Piston ring change the shock of the impact will usually spin them off, if you use an impact you have to make sure your air hose and compressor have enough volume to feed the gun. you can shock it with a breaker bar a friend and a big hammer |

| Re: Piston ring change I bought the wrench. I spent an hour and a half with the breaker bar, the wrench only needed 4 impacts to loosen it! Now that the clutch and alternator are off, this should be apart by the end of the week. |

| Re: Piston ring change Yeah everything is drained. It looks like lithium grease, but I don't know why it would be in the screw holes.
The engine has been disassembled, and I think the leaking problem was caused by the piston rings not being aligned correctly. On the worst cylinder, the gaps were almost in line with each other. Is it normal for rings to rotate when the engine is in use? And if the rings are like that, does it mean I just have to spin them the other way to get the compression back up?
Here are pictures of the engine now- Disassembly pictures from motor sports photos on webshots |

| Re: Piston ring change I always put rings 120 degrees apart. Make sure to gap the new rings. As for the fluid in the case bolts, I have no idea. Are you using andything like wd40 or pd blaster? If so, then it could be that. Grease is not normally used on case bolts. Does the flywhee have to come of for you to get the crank out, it doesn't appear to? Did you use the puller or some other method, fast shipping on puller. |

| Re: Piston ring change Would it be possible to reuse these rings, or would I be better off going with new rings. It looks like the only problem is that they rotated during use.
The alternator was the only part that needed the puller, and the impact wrench too and the motion pro puller took care of that. The crank just lifted out after I took the clamps for the pistons off. And I haven't needed to use any penetrating oil. I don't know what this stuff is. |
