VF500F exhausting question

I appologize now for all the questions I have and will have, I'm new to bikes and trying to learn more. quickly.

I have a question or two about the exhaust on my 1984 VF500F.

First off, I see all 4 cylinders dump into what looks to be a chamber according to my Clymer this is called a "common collector", I haven't been able to determine if there is anything special about this chamber, like passages, or an X pipe or maybe just a resonator, so what is the purpose of this part? Is there really anything special about it?

Next, If I were to remove that part, the above mentioned chamber, would there be any benefit to having all cylinders go through a single muffler? I know on automotive applications this is a benefit, and can help with scavenging of other cylinders.

The reason I ask is because that part (the collector) on mine needs repair or replaced, I will most likely for now just weld in a stub pipe to repair it and run it for now, but would like to tune the bike a bit more than it will be in factory form.

TIA
