'85 VF500F Fuel Pump

So, my buddy and I picked up an '85 VF500F a month or two ago and of course the fuel pump was dead. What the guy we bought it from had done was simply remove the pump and couple the lines together. They went up and down and all around and starved the engine. Luckily the bike is easy to bump start!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had detailed instructions for removing the fuel pump and rerouting the lines. I went to Autozone and picked up a length of fuel line and just ran it straight from the petcock to the carbs. It's better than it was before, and I can even get it to idle properly, but once you start going it just dies the second you let go of the throttle. It seems to be ok if I leave the choke revving the engine at 3k, but it still occasionally putters out. Is that the best it's going to get without a fuel pump, or can it actually run normally? I'm going to run some carb cleaner through it this weekend, maybe that'll help a bit.
