| 1996 VFR I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE A 1996 VFR 750, THIS IS MY FIRST BIKE. I CANNOT GET THE BATTERY TO CHARGE, I REPLACED THE BATTERY AND CHECKED THE VOLTAGE OF THE ALTERNATOR AND THE REGULATOR, AND THEY ALL PASS CURENT PROPERLY ACCORDING TO MANUAL. THE PERSON WHOM I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE FROM SAID THEY HAD TO REPLACE SOME MODULE, BUT I AM NOT SURE ON IT. I CAN GET THE BIKE TO START IF I HOOK JUMPER CABLE UP TO IT,BUT AS SOON AS I TAKE THEM OFF, IT DIES. THE WIRES ATTACHED TO THE REGULATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACE, THEY WERE EITHER ARCHED OR RUSTED, SOI CUT AND OUT NEW FEMALE PLUGS ON IT. I DONT KNOW WHERE TO GO FROM HERE, THE REG PASS VOLT TEST ACCORDING TO MANUAL AND I CHECKED THE WIRES AND THEY PASSED. ANY SUGGESTION. I LOVE THIS BIKE, I AM 73 INCHES AND 240 AND WAS WORRIED ABOUT NOT HAVING ENOUGH POWER AND IT PERFORMS. I AM SERIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT RESTORING THIS BIKE TO SHOWROOM CONDITION, AS I LOVE IT, BUT I NEED HELP WITH SOME ELECTRICAL ISSUES. ANY IDEAS???????????????????????????????????? |

Second, it's very common to these bikes. Go buy a new regulator/rectifier. Don't bother with an old one, they've been updated. It basically looks like a metal plate with a heat sink in it and will almost definitely cure the problem. My 1995 did exactly the same thing.
If no one down there can help, email Steve @ speedwerks (www. speedwerks .com) in Delaware. He set me up with a new one and the bike has had zero issues since. |

These things have a cult following and you'll realize why the more miles you put on it.
How much is Dennis Kirk charging for them? They aren't always a great deal.
Good luck.

| Re: 1996 VFR I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just looked on Dennis Kirk. I don't have time to search for the specific VFR r/r, but they are ranging from $120 to $200 before shipping from them.
It's worth a call to speedwerks. Prices may have changed in the past 2yrs, but I paid less than that. |

| Re: 1996 VFR I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the harness that hooks up to the r/r was a little fried, i repaired it though. i think i am just going to get a r/r from the honda dealership. i charged the battery on a 2 amp and got about 50 miles out of it. i raced my aunt who has a 1400 cc harley and left her in the dust. she wanted ti ride it, and i let her. it was funny watching her ride my vfr in her harley jacket! |
