Running rough at steady throttle. Help?

So, todays the first day iv had my 1986 VFR 750 On the road, im a new rider.

While crusing, 3-4000 rpm, the bike starts missing. if you crack the thottle, it comes to life... its ok before the engine is at normal temp aswell. It has 39000kms on it, i pulled the #3 plug, and it looks like its time to replace, i took the plug wire out from the coil, and the inside of the wire is rusty and almost gone... if its missing while crusing, and i apply just a little choke, it gets wayyy worse, witch tells me its running rich already, without the choke... Or, the spark just sucks... Whats your opinions? plugs and wires? or just take it to a shop? i am a mechanic, but the front two plugs look like they suck to change...

Re: Running rough at steady throttle. Help?

id change plugs and leads, can never do any harm, how does it idle?

when you crack it open does it pull good?

maybe a bit down on power?

Re: Running rough at steady throttle. Help?

idles fine. when u crack the throttle just to rev it, it blowes black, indicating not completly burning the fuel, it was acting up really bad tonight on the way home from grand bend then i just revved the hell out of if and it got a little better, but when u crack it riding, it seems to hit all 4, but still lacking a little... i pulled the air filter and cleaned it, although it wasnt that bad... im sure plugs and wires will make it much better, i cant see the carbs being out of wack. btw, it has a performance exhaust.. vince and haynes? or somthing? lol but im told its ok and wont effect it... whats involved in changing the front two plugs? whats the gap supposed to be? Thanks...

Re: Running rough at steady throttle. Help?

cant help you there man, never worked on a vfr, maybe a specalist tool, or maybe drop the engine a lil to get at them, thats what i have to do with my cbr.

is there and sign of a lack of power at high speeds?

at one point my cbr wouldnt go over 100mph, the fault was that the carbs wasnt balanced but its a easy fix

best thing would be to see if you can get a service manual or haynes manual for it, it will have all of the tech info you need

Re: Running rough at steady throttle. Help?

nah thats not the problem... im almost positive its just plugs and wires... if the back two look like crap, i can only imagin no ones ever replaced the front two... ill prolly just drop it off at the local bike shop the next rainy day and get them done and oil change and crap... one of the fork seals is gunna be shot soon too... The joys of buying a used 86... lol, i think its gunna need spockets soon too.. the chain had some bad noise but we lubed it up with chain wax or somthing... i dunno, my buddie uses it on hin SV650... ill keep the thread updated.
