Need Help w/ 98-01 VFR800

So, I can't seem to find the answer to this in my service manual anywhere.....

If anyone can either send me a pic, or tell me the answer, I'd greatly appreciate it.

My question regards the front left brake setup on a 5th Gen 98-01 VFR800.

On the secondary master cylinder, there's a line that runs from the hard lines crossing the forks to the secondary master cylinder and then continues on to the left brake caliper. Of the two spots on the secondary master cylinder where lines attach, can anyone tell which one is the correct one. Unfortunately, the pictures in the service manual aren't clear enough, and I've forgotten which one it was originally attached to.

Also, word of advice: Don't buy the Galfer SS line kit for the VFR....what a headache!!

hey -Z-

Unfortently, I didn't see your post until after I purchased the Galfer brake lines for 2000 VFR. Did you ever get them figured out on your bike. For the life me, I cannot figure out how to do the front ones. Would you mind send me a few photos if you have some time. My bikes been apart for a few days now collecting dust because I can't figure this out. The most confusing part is the "T" type connector.. errr !!! Or maybe you could post the photos here online.

Any help would be awesome... thanks buddy.

Bill, I'll take and post some pictures tomorrow during the day for you. Yeah, I did get it all figured out, and I gotta say, what a mess!!! If I had known it'd be like this, I'd have custom-ordered the lines myself and done them differently, for a much cleaner, more efficient install. But don't worry man, I've been dealing with this headache for a good minute, so yes I'll do everything I can to help you out.

Re: Need Help w/ 98-01 VFR800

I'm looking forward to pics. My attemp today failed. I thought maybe the 3 cables connected via the "T" type were for the front lines but the bike wouldn't stop very fast, I don't think there was enough pressure. So I'm ready for the pics so I can get this finished tomorrow.

thanks again

Re: Need Help w/ 98-01 VFR800

Okay, so attached are the pics I took a few minutes ago. Not exactly the best of pics, but I'll try to describe everything as well.

Okay, so the three-way line is for the front. It runs from the master cylinder down to the top banjo bolt on both calipers. The shorter side goes to the right front caliper, with the longer side swinging over the wheel to the left front caliper. The hard line on the right side goes to the top of the delay valve above the right caliper. The SHORTEST line runs from the delay valve to the last banjo bolt on the right caliper. That should take care of the right side.

Now, the left side is where it gets tricky.

The second shortest line runs from the bottom banjo bolt to the banjo bolt on the secondary master cylinder CLOSEST to the fork. The line from the delay valve above the right master cylinder attaches to the same banjo bolt as the line I just mentioned. The line from the hard line on the left runs down to the last banjo bolt on the secondary master cylinder, which is the one farthest away from the forks.

Now, as far as lines go, that should be everything for the front.

If you're having problems with getting enough braking power, bleed the brakes again and again. The procedure is very involved because of the way the front and rear systems are linked. Let me know if you need a step-by-step of the bleeding procedure.

Re: Need Help w/ 98-01 VFR800

hey Z,

thanks for you help. I was able to complete the front brakes with "T" type connector, the clutch, and the rear. I still have 4 remaining cables though and cannot complete the job. I believe one of my cables is too short. Specificly it's the one that runs from the hardline right next to the left side of the gas tank down to the linked secondar master valve. It's just too short, it won't make it. With that being said I couldn't finish the job. I may try and custom order a cable so I can finish. I'm complaining to Galfer right now though and we'll see what comes of that.

I really wish I would have gone with the Spieglar brake kit instead of this Galfer one. The Spieglar kit comes with directions, numbered cables, and blocks. Live and learn though.

Could you take a picture of the inside left side caliper/secondar master so I can see those cables. On the left side caliper I connect from the bottom caliper using the shorty cable but got confused which port to connect it too on the secondary master. If I connect it to the one nearest the fork, am I to use the double banjo there? it just looks like it'll be awfully close to the tire.

Again thanks for all your help. My front brakes work really well now with the braided lines, galfer pads, and wave rotors. I still don't recommend this Galfer kit though. PIA to install and I'm still not done because I don't have the right parts.. lol
