02 VFR oil filter will not come off?

Any ideas? I tried strap wrenches then just bought one of the end cap variants and I cranked on it and eventually it started turning but not the filter. I need to get this friggin thing off so I can finish this oil change?????

Large screwdriver and a hammer. Put the screwdriver though the filter and use it to turn it.

ok, if the canister is spinning but not the thin metal base, what you need to do is get a small metal chisel and hammer and tap on the metal ring where it seats up to the emgine, but becarefull not to hit the engine.

sounds like what happened is it stuck to the block and you spun the filter cover.

I've had where the filter was put on so tight from the factory that I busted a oil filter wrench. It rounded the end off. So I used the screwdriver method.

I used this same technique to get an oil filter off my Toyota truck. I would guess that the filter was put on without lubricating the o-ring.

guys thanks for the replys I was hoping it wouldnt come to that, i think the case isnt spinning so there is hope, I thought about drilling a hole in the filter wrench and running a screw through it and filter, maybe less of a mess.

When you drill it be careful not to hit the threads. Drill at the end of the filter. I've done the screw driver bit before. Drilling just sounds scary.

Yeah, I had to do that once as a last resort. Another reason I like to do my own oil changes....then I have no one to curse out by myself if the filter is on too tight...

Or, use large water-pump pliers (also known as "slip-joint" pliers). They open wide enough where you can grab the thing, crunch down and get it started. It's usually just that first turn that's difficult..

True, I've crushed filters and managed to get them off without resorting the to the puncture/screw driver method.

That seems like a more neater way of doing it, but I would have opted for the hammer and screwdriver.

My Mini's engine is so compact that was the only way to take it off.
