Honda 599 Saddle Bags

Good morning all, hope your all enjoying the great riding weather like I am. I do want to pick the community's brain though. I have a 2006 Honda CB600F and recently was offered a deal I couldn't pass up. A fellow co-worker sold me a set of Fieldsheer saddle bags for $30.00 as they didn't fit his bike. I'm told that they normally go for about $110.00

They are listed here -> 2007 fieldsheer website

But what my question is that the saddle bag on the right side lays directly over the exhaust. Now I've been paying very close attention and it doesn't seem to be getting hot to cause any damage, but I wanted to see if anyone had any insight for me. Thanks In advance.

Is the cannister carbon fiber? If so, you should be fine, otherwise I'd be concerned about it melting if it comes in contact with it.

So I did a check on FeildSheers website and sent them an email to kinda of just see what they thought, and the guy sent me a link to the products information page and said that the bags have a Protective heat resistant shield on bases to protect from pipe burn. So looks like it should be fine. Thanks for the input though.

Re: Honda 599 Saddle Bags

Ok, I'm reviving an old thread because I have a question about saddle bags. Is anybody using textile saddle bags on their 919? Is there anything special you have to do to keep them from melting on the exhaust? I've been considering getting some Cortech sport bags, but would really like to hear what people have been doing.

Re: Honda 599 Saddle Bags

XR Steve, I have a tank bag (Eclipse, way nice stuff) and a seat bag (MotoFizz Camping Seat Bag size Medium, freakin' huge) instead of saddle bags. I use the tank bag all the time, it's expandable and holds a good bit without being in the way and if I need to haul a lot I put on the seat bag. The seat bag is kind of pain to get it put on right where it won't shift or be in the way but after some trial and error it's not too bad. I thought about saddlebags, but decided on a small tank bag and a large (ish) seat bag instead, just because that set-up met my needs better.

If you have stock exhaust you should be ok with virtually any saddlebag that has some form of heat resistant fabric. I'm not sure about the Cortec bags but they should be ok. An email to Cortech should remove any doubt. If you have aftermarket exhaust and were worried about melting them, anyone in town that makes racing suits for dirt track, cart racing, etc. they should be able to sell (or give) you some scrap pieces in almost any color you could want and you can sew them on. Nomex is good stuff.

Re: Honda 599 Saddle Bags

Stock exhausts will gradually damage the saddle bags...if not melt them during your first trip...

If you have aftermarket exhausts it depends on how hot they get....

Re: Honda 599 Saddle Bags

odt... Are the heat shields on a 599 different than on a 919? Mine never get anything other than slightly warm even after hard riding. I guess if you sat in traffic on a hot day they might get hot but I have always been able to hold my hand on them right after riding. I would think the aftermarket exhausts would get hot, but my stocks don't.

I'm afraid so..yes...

The exhaust is much different...and not that well made...pic pic2

the heat shield eventually gets hot...especially when it is covered by something (saddle bag)

I recently installed a mivv x cone which it barely becomes noticeably warm...even after some "not so legal" riding

That's more than likely due to the freakin' huge outlet tube. I bet that exhaust has a nice sound. Looks good.
