things to look for when test riding a 919?

Stopped by the local dealer today and they just got two new '07 919's and were putting them together. I can try one out tomorrow. I've always wanted to try a 919 because I love the look, want a standard-type riding position, and want smooth power and super reliability.

The dealer said they got them from CA, so they likely have CA emissions equipment. Anything to be wary of with that?

Everything I've read about the 919 sounds great except for this exhaust stink issue. Has there ever been any resolution for that? From what I can find it looks like some people have it, some don't, and it's a total gamble as to whether you'll have it.

The dealer wants $7k (not counting fees) so it would be a good deal. Thanks!

I haven't heard of any of the newer ones having the exhaust stink.

The dealers that still have the 919's are pretty much all listing them at $7k or $6,999 .

Ask for a couple of free accessories like a center stand or new jacket, first service 600 mile service for free, etc.

Ah, glad to hear they have a centerstand. Also nice to hear the exhaust problem might not be an issue anymore.

How's maintenance on these things? I've done all my own on my old Yamaha cruiser.

update: doing more reading, and see that it looks like a center stand can't be added without removing the evap canister (for good I presume) on CA models. i don't mind removing it as long as it has no negative effect on the bike. looks like it's not too difficult.

There are a couple different centerstands available for the Hornet. The OEM stand instructions tell you to loosen the header and disconnect the Y pipe. But the Y pipe can be removed without loosening the head pipes. But there is also a stand made by SW MOTECH that also works well and is a little less $. All kinds of info just like this over on Wrist Twisters Performance -- there are hundreds of 919 owners over there. I'm Ken there - stop by and say HI!

I've got a 2005 (end of 05) Hornet and honestly haven't noticed the exhaust smell - They are great machines.

The centre stand is something you don't need - if its free then obv take it, but otherwise there is no point splashing out on one - get a paddock stand.

The Hornets IMO are heavier bikes compared to the Blade for example, make sure you test ride it throughly and make sure its the one for you.

Good luck
