New Honda Hornet 900 Problems I Think!??!

Hi I bought a new Honda Hornet 2007 which has now 100kms on the meter.

Thinks that are kind of annoying me are:

1) rev counter moves a little bit up and down (less than 1mm) as if the engine is not idling uniformly.

2)When I ride at low speed 30km/h (obvouisly on 1st and 2 nd gears) the ride is not smooth(kind of jerky) , if I accelerate it becomes smooth

3) Also when I engine brake the deceleration is not smooth and a bit jerky.

Could it be because the engine is new? And needs kms to become smooth?

Thanks for the time

Re: New Honda Hornet 900 Problems I Think!??!

I understand what you are saying, my 05 Hornet does the same.

My Hornet's and my Blade's revs go up and down ever so slightly, I think that is due to the octane rating and the engine pinging/pinking (depending on what side of the pond you are on)

The jerky ness maybe due to being in a low gear causing it to judder...? Try remaining in first and hold the throttle steady - does she act the same?

the riding has become smooth but engine brake is still shuddery even in slopes on 1st and 2nd gears mostly

You may want to check the chain. Mine was doing that and it ended up that my chain was a bit loose. Also, if you are decelerating and are pretty low in the revs, it can do this.

I solved the problem by touching the throttle a bit while engine brake .

The engine didn't change. They changed the paint color on the valve cover, clutch cover, and stator color to black in the US from 2004 - 2007. There was an overseas model with a solid black engine.

The paint changed once on US 919s, but that's it.

As far as your fork question goes. The only direct fork swap is the F4i forks. However, there is a member of another forum selling a direct bolt on kit for converting to the RC-51 front end. It includes RC-51 wheel, fender, forks, triple trees, brakes, and radial master cylinder. Most of the 919 guys I know hang out over at WristTwisters.com. Actually, about 75% of that site is 919s.

Here's a link to the ad just in case you are interested. He's asking $650 for the whole package...shipped.
FS: RC51 Bolt on Front End for your 919 - Wrist Twisters

Here's a picture of his bike before he removed the forks to part it out and return it to stock form before selling.

I know you said your issues were fixed, but I'm going to post a better response than my first one in case anyone else comes here looking.

1) No bike idles perfectly smooth. However, if you compare a 600rr or 1000rr to your 919, you will find differences. The RRs are going to have an oversquare engine. this means the stroke is shorter than the diameter of the cylinder bore. Combine that with their lighter pistons, valves, and crank, you get a very smooth running, high revving engine. The 919, on the other hand, has heavier pistons, valves, crank, and a longer stroke which makes it a little less 'smooth'

2) This is likely a combination of transmission and chain lash. At just the right speed, the bike will actually roll go through a jerky cycle of the engine pulling the bike along, then the bike free-wheeling faster than the engine, then slowing down and the engine pulling forward again.

3) If you experience jerky engine braking, you should try removing and plugging the Variable Intake Valve vacuum line. This is known commonly as the flapper mod. According to the manual, at lower RPM, the flapper valve closes. This restricts air into the airbox causing the jerky deceleration. Removing the flapper vacuum hose was the first thing I did to my 919 and it made deceleration quite a bit smoother.
