600 mile check up?

Hey guys, just curious what you guys think about the 600 mile check up that the dealer tells me that I have to get done when I reach it? I can definitely see where an oil change would be a good thing, but what else do they do and is it something that REALLY needs to be done? I know I can do the oil change myself, but is there anything that is real important that needs to be done that I can do myself?
Thanks for you thoughts.

Having the dealer do your 600 mile check up is a rip off. Change your oil/filter, and check the following: chain play, chain lube, throttle play, coolant level, play in the steering head bearings, tire pressure (should be doing this all the time anyway), brake fluid level, and the tightness of every fastener you can see. Oh yea, give her a good wash. This is all the dealer does, except the wash.

bought mine used with 14k and now 16 months later in about to role 34k. Check up seems overrated. I know a guy that got a new 919 and had his done, but nothing changes.

Re: 600 mile check up?

Thanks guys! I found some great links to step-by-step maintenance on the 919. I'm not a mechanic (yet), but I am pretty good at following instructions and I believe that I should be able to handle all of the general stuff pretty easily. Probably won't send it to the shop for the 600 mile. I'll probably just take the $$$ and invest in a good stand and do it all myself.
Thanks!!!!

Re: 600 mile check up?

The 600 mile service is mostly for the oil change (would be run in on mineral oil not semi or full), but I wouldn't wait that long to change it thats for sure (after seeing how nasty the oil is after 100 kms on a new bike).

They are supposed to check the bike over, dont forget they assembled it from a crate only 600 miles ago, its probably worth the piece of mind to get them to check that everything is torqued up properly and all is in order. Biggest reason not to skip this service is that without an approved mech stamping off on it, you've voided your warranty. Thats how it works in aus at least.

This is not true in the US.
