2003 CRF450R Hard Start

i am having the hardest time getting this things to start and stay running the running part is because of the idle needing to be adjusted anybody know the location of the idle screw and as for the hard start t i have to perform a ritual to even get it to kind of start. ritual= shut fuel off put in neutral and then pull hot start and then kick like hell and then sometimes it will start any ideas on why its so damn hard to start its hard to kick also my plan is to disassemble the carb today and clean it and put it back together any suggestions and can i use carb cleaner or should i just use air?

Thank you and god bless

Is this a problem that just started?
Are you bringing it past compression before kicking through?
Is the decompressor working?
Have you checked the valve clearances?
Are you keeping the throttle closed?
If you need to shut of the fuel then perhaps it's flooding?
How many hours the spark plug?
How many hours on the oil?
The idle adjuster will be someone on the carb I would expect.

Yes, strip the carb completely including the choke circuit and mixture screw, soak everything in carb cleaner and blow it all through with compressed air checking that fluid does actually pass through every orifice.

Re: 2003 CRF450R Hard Start

I just got the bike last Wednesday so I'm not sure
Yes I am
I believe so
No I have not probably need to be done how hard is that and reshimming
Yes throtttles closed
That's what I was thinking also
I think the spark plug has a ton of hours especially since it down to a needle point lol
Oil has 6hours on it changed it before I went on my ride this weekend

It's also seems like its hard to kick it seems like but it could just be me I haven't ridden in years lol

Those bikes are very finicky about their service intervals...check valve adjustment almost certain this is your issue.

First thing I would do to CRF250/450...seen enough at the shop to know.

Get a manual and just follow the instructions.
Checking the clearances simply requires removing the valve cover, putting the engine on TDC and measuring the clearances with feeler gauges.
Adjusting the shims requires pulling the camshaft so you can replace the shims.

Quite easy if you are patient and have decent mechanical skills. If you don't then paying someone to check/adust the valves is highly recommended.

Ya I called a local engine builder and its gunna be 300 for a complete valve adjustment and gaskets and a complete carb rebuild so that sounds good to me
