Four wheelers

Well, since Mattress started a dirtbike thread, I decided to do the same here.
I have an '03 Honda Rincon and an '03 Polaris Predator 50 - for our daughter. I had an '01 Rubicon, but sold it a few months back to make room for the '04 TRX 450R that I will be picking up some time in January.

Who else has what?

I have a 1987 TRX250R that is totally modded for motocross. Full 50" width, triple rate shocks, blah blah blah.

BDA I see you are from Utah. Ever heard of K&T motors? They did the porting on my cylinder.

That's pretty funny, as K&T did my buddy's TRX250R. They did good work, and his quad screams.

Yeah, I was real impressed with K&T. They were cheaper and timelier than most and did a real good job.

I am really looking forward to seeing the new 450F. That thing will probably finally end the reign of the almighty 250R.

Looks pretty clean. Also looks like you've got some money into it.
How long has your frame been done?
I only ask because I've helped my buddy strip his bike three or four times for various reasons. This last time he had it powdercoated red - two years ago, and it already is looking beat.

These pics are from last February, which was right after I got the frame gussetted and powdercoated. It still looks pretty good - partly because I very rarely ride this thing. It is probably that Utah sand that makes your buddies frame look rough. This quad only sees mud - no sand.

This was a total basket case when I got it and I went over virtually every single bolt. It was blown up, the calipers were all corroded shut, every single bearing in it was junk, the master cylinders were seized, etc etc etc - it wouldn't even roll. It took a year before it ran at all and three years to get it to this point.

I don't even want to know how much I have in it, but I do know it's more than I have in my Fireblade.

Ah quads, my first bike ever. Got and LT80 when I was 5, dad sold it around 6 because I was "too crazy" on it and he was having nightmares. Got a Honda 300EX at 15, great bike, frame didn't hold up too well though

, cracked it in like 10 places in the front. That is a clean 250r you got there, those are hard to find in good shape. I wouldn't mind have a quad again, just to drag race at the dunes though

Very very nice Raptor!!

I just rode a YFZ450 this weekend for the first time - pretty impressive for a stock quad. My old 2 stroke gets more obsolete everyday.

I bet that Raptor rips. I've ridden a stock one, and thought it was pretty fast for a quad. Damn near too much for the woods.

yeah I ride more desert than trails.... I am pushing just under 64HP naturally asperated... it's fun to take it up the street with roll on third gear wheelies....

Yes, there is the slight chance of that setup pulling in a pant leg.
However, the riders that own and mod these types of quads typically wear correct gear. If you have on gear, you don't have a pant leg anywhere near that area.

That is a pure race quad. I only get on it with full gear including riding boots.

My bike is the same way.

I know nothing about 4 wheelers, but I'm thinking of getting one for trail riding and getting muddy. I don't want to spring for a fancy new one, so what are some options for this type of riding that are the best mix of good/reliable/affordable/powerful?
And what's a good resource to learn more about 4 wheelers and this type of riding?

The only advice I have to offer is to be sure you buy a Honda and absolutely stay away from Polaris. A Rancher or Recon would be a good Honda model to have... or ... if you want a sporty one, get a 400EX. They are pretty quick, handle great, have e-start, and are absolutely bullet proof.

The 400 EX is a very nice quad. Easy to ride, and very durable. Pretty good performance, and great in the woods, only complaint is that it doesn't have reverse. An old roomate had one. Here I am having fun jumping onto his brother's driveway. He was telling me he regrets selling it at a little party we had just a couple of weekends ago.

I really miss my old Fourtrax 250R. The new 450's look sweet (both Honda and Yamaha). When the kids get a bit older I am going to try to find a used 450 and get it modded out. I grew up out in the middle of nowhere and used to ride practically every day. We had trails right by my house that would go for miles and miles through the woods, along creek beds, and in the river. Those were the days...
