| New SP-2 / RC-51 owner with newbie q's Gentlemen , Id like to say a quick hello and a few q's as a newbie to the SP-2 / RC-51 . I live in Perth West Aus , and am soon to have delivery of my first VTR SP-2 (04) . I used to be a pro mx racer , till a mild injury (broken back and leg , long term paralasys etc) retired me , and after 12 years of putting it off , im buying my first big bike . I started my buisness years ago that i run nowadays (now its perf part manufacture for Toyota and other turbo imports - commonly ones to hunt down bikes haha) that started life as specialist 2 stroke / 4 stroke and suspension building services , so bikes , efi , turbos and engines i know well , its the exact detailed info of the SP-2 that i seek
My current offroad bike is a modified Honda EX-416 atv i built up to race , hence the whole "the SP is not a daily rider / stiff / uncomfortable" debate doesnt worry me the least .... ive spent time on one and its relative to what your used to , and to me the SP is one hell of a smooth and comfortable ride when compared to a offroad ATV .
So thats me in a few words , my q's are as follows .
Once the engine is broken in (having a new crated bike delivered to me - never started 0 kms) i want to add ...
- Dynojet PC PCIIIr (fuel and ign)
- Yoshi Ti / Sato / Arata - slip on / system
- Airshifter setup as on EX (i cant move ankles)
- Gearing
After that ill look into doing some work on the forks and shock .
What my q's are as follows in order ....
- The PCIIIr , is that a module that can store multiple maps and revert back to OEM mapping for eg via bar switch or simmilar ? .
- The exhaust debate .... ive allways been a big RS3 Oval can Yoshi fan , are they a GOOD can for the Honda ? . The Sato and Arata seem to be more popular ..... is it that they are better ? .... or just what people seem to be currently using . I know how Jap parts get .... the quality and finish is second to none , and thier parts allways work , bike or car , but is the Yoshi not up there with em ? . Ill do some track days , but reality is , i wont race it , between racing cars and other things i wont have the time or money . BUT , i do want to buy one exhaust for it and be done , price excluded . This same goes for slip on ? ... or full system . Please advise , as i say i want the more optimal setup i can get , and do it once only .
Thats it for now , hope to become somewhat of a regular here .... magnificent bikes . I have ridden a mates CBR1000 quite a bit , but the SP-2 does have that character about it that the I4's seem to have refined out of them . Both are great , but different , and i guess the twin is me . Cheers .

breaking your back was a "mild" injury? glad you're doing alright and have continued to do fun things and getting a street bike.
All my knowlege od the RC51 comes from stuff people here have said. Everyone swears buy the Sato pretty much, for power, sound and whatever other reasons. I think the typical gearing is -1 front and +2 back (I could be wrong but others will chime in for sure). I know everyone adds a PC3 but not sure if anyone gets the R for the ignition control. I believe it can sorta do multiple maps (I don't think its actually different maps), you can set the controls to either bypass the map you have loaded into it so it runs as the stock map tells it, you can also richen or lean out parts of the rev range (high, mid low). Also throw on a set of frame sliders and you're well on your way to dumping boatloads of cash into that thing.

| Re: New SP-2 / RC-51 owner with newbie q's to the org and the world of twins
If you havent already done so check out RC51.org's mod section its like a one stop shop for proven mods on the RC
As for the exhaust debate I think you will find most RC owners run Satos and swear that there is no other but me personally cant get myself to spend over 1k on just slipons and then still need a PCIII. Also on RC51.org in the mods section there is a good write up on exhausts. From what I have read Yosh is a pretty good slipon performance wise on the 51. Same type as numbers as the Moriwaki ones since they are in the same family. I am probably going with Yosh in time since the $$ and perf is right for me.
Gearing is a definate. Most go -1fr/+1rear on the Sp2's which makes a huge difference. Puts the rc power right where she wants to be
Other things to consider are flapper removal and soft rev limiter, which can also be found on rc51.org

Did alot of research for good priced well made cans that smooth things out & Yosh kept coming up. Look sweet sound sweet and the price is right at $650 from a board sponsor |

Here is a thread started by your fellow Aussies - happy reading, shouldn't take you more than a couple of days... Aussie postwhoring thread |

| Re: New SP-2 / RC-51 owner with newbie q's Thanks for the great welcome guys .. CBR929RE : It really sucks sometimes , but you gotta move on , stay broke and buy toys . Life is short ... there are upsides tho , like wide disabled bay parking , and rolling up in the 'chair to a mates shop (i still use a chair sometimes on longer trips or shopping malls etc) , to jump on a CBR 1000 and go for a blat
Yea thats the consensus about the Sato's , and the PC isnt commonly the IGN type aswell ? . Hmm ... ok , i was thinking only while im buying , why not have the ability there , but it depends on many factors of the octane , comp , squish/quench zones/cyl head & piston design and most importantly if the stock IGN maps are aggressive enuf on pump fuels ... hmm , cheers for the heads up . Is this the same with most of you other guys ? ... no IGN side on the PC3? . Oh and your right for sure on the sliders . TGZ13 : I just read up that site , and its great to get a site filled with exp rather than "a mate said ... " , well done to the creators. The flapper mod makes more sence now .... i have a friend in Honda Aus dept , he said when i grab one , to "gut" the intake .... i didnt ask , but now i know what he meant . Have the Aus-Spec ones run the soft limiter ?. The gearing is a must .. i have ridden one with stock gearing and it was too tall in 1st around the burbs . WHats the consensus of alum rears ? ... i know they shall last half the rate of a steel unit , but what kinda mileage are they lasting ?
As far as the exhaust , the Yoshi is made of good quality materials and have a great name in aus . Anyone have the exp to specifically say "these are different to the Sato's here and there" . And is it worth going full or slip on ? Bacchus : LOL ... mate no problem ! . Perth is lovely ... its not the biggest Aus city , but imho the nicest . The weather here tho is made for bikes , thats a big bonus . You coming back sometime ? |

| Re: New SP-2 / RC-51 owner with newbie q's G'day SAF and welcome
I'm a soon to be 04' sp-2 owner myself, as soon as I get the funds and honda drop it to a reasonable price.
Aussie sp-2's don't have soft rev limitors so no hassles there, and the flapper mod is a must esp with pipes, sound even better!
I wouldn't recommend satos in aus as there are no importers that I'm aware of and you'd have to ship them in yourself. Have a chat with the Sook, he runs doohin bikes they are a sponsor here, he runs an sp in the national superbikes and will have all the gear you need at mates rates, or so he tells us.
I'd go the yoshi's but if $ is no object full Acropovic system, my 2c
Oh and is you ever wondered where the black scheme comes from it's based on the british superbike championship bike from last year, just peel of that ugly vtr sticker, get a black front guard, and a dassault undertail, Sweeeet! |

I hear you on the price of the SP ... its insane . Its even worse here on the west coast .... im buying a bike in a crate form Melbourne , as its cheaper to buy it there , ship it here , and drop a set of Sato slip-ons on it , and i may still have a couple bux change .
As far as overseas stuff , im not taht fussed , all of my parts i sell for my customers (import car) is all ex-Japan etc , so im not that worried on that aspect . I will try and give Sook a holler . |

| Actually, I don't care for Sato's as they are just too loud for anything but the track. I prefer Moriwaki for their exceptional build quality and overall performance. |
