| Thinking about a RC51 Im thinking about buying a rc51. Its an awesome looking bike. I like the dual exhaust. Ive heard they are a bit heavy. For you with the rc what year is the best to get? Im assuming they stopped making them in 03? I can trade my 929 in for one. So basically just want to know performance wise and horsepower. With a modded 51 what should I expect and will the jump from the 929 to the 51 be dissapointing? From what I read the 929 has more horsepower and lighter so im not sure. Thanks for any insight. |

| Re: Thinking about a RC51 That heavy crap is overexaggerated by a longshot. It's a good bike, it's basically a reliable Ducati, they built it to dethrone Ducati. It's down on power from the current crop of literbikes, but still makes 130HP at the rear wheel with a good set of slipons and map. You'll love it, go for it! |

Check it out for full stats. Great bike, never heard anything bad from owners. I even like the black/metallic gray of the '05 RC51. |

it is underpowered, at 130 RWHP, vs 140+ for newer bikes
the suspension does blow......( )
but everyone and their squidly grandmothers don't have an RC51. it's all that, AND kicked Ducati's ass in WSBK.
you don't see Nicky Haden's signature under the clearcoat of a Vespa scooter, do ya? |

| Re: Thinking about a RC51 I see some appeal to having something somewhat rare and unique. RC51 was purpose-built to beat Ducatis, I think that's cool. Don't sweat the weight issue; throw some slip-ons on there and you're already down about 20 pounds. I think if you were to keep it 10 years or more it could turn into a bit of a collector's item as v-twin superbikes begin to vanish. |

the suspension does blow......( ) | Sato + Power Commander will give another 10hp. I also went 15/41 on the sprockets and have fun smoking the hell out of my friends of the starting line. Truth is, most guys start doing different mods to their bikes (for whatever reason) no matter what manufacturer it is. The guy with a damper and a Power Commander will have better control of his bike than the next guy with a completely stock bike, while the third guy blows right buy you because he did some other mod and has skills. Comparisons mean nothing as a properly modded bike can blow away a stock, or better yet an improperly modded bike (and there are a lot of DIY guys who screw up their rides) are just making their ride perform worse. Bottom line, if you ride the streets and the canyons on the V-Twin you already have one leg up on the rest. Personally, I think riding skill is the biggest bottleneck when comparing bike. I've seen guys on CBR 600s outperform guys on Gixxer 1000 because they were better, more experienced riders. Ya gotta have skills or it all means nothing.
