| Re: I want a RC51 =) Fast bikes. Is a 750 quicker than an rc51...... Fast bikes are great but can any of u rubes even ride these bikes any where near the bikes capability. I don't think so. I just purchased an 04 rc51. I have only ridden it home on the fwy, not in the twisties. They say this bike is heavy and not as quick as the 999R or ....... F ! this bike is fast. I think it's a handful in the tight stuff due to the torque. I think my 91 gsxr is easier in the thigt stuff. |

| Re: I want a RC51 =) I've Spent 11 years riding I-4's and I have to say that the fiddyone is not for me. Feels like insane cornering clearance though, leaned over and still having a foot of daylight. I wasn't exactly balling on it though. It wasnt mine.
The bike just felt unnatural to ride for me. I dunno if it was the engine braking or the weight of the rotating assembly or what, but it just felt "heavy" while riding around town. |

Abtech's is gorgeous, and sounds like the walls of hell are coming down around your ears.. when he comes up behind you on the track I swear the ground shakes. And there's another fast Trackoholics guy with an RC who did something to make his gear-driven cams sound like screaming banshees to counterpoint his race exhaust.
Maybe they remind me of Rottweillers, or something. Now that I think about it, I feel similarly about Milles. Not Ducatis, though, or the V4 RC's.
I think someone should let me take a few laps on theirs so that I can come to really appreciate them! |
kinky! anyone have more info on the making the gear drives noisy????? |

First is way to low stock and when you regear it gets a lot quicker (and you and not in 3rd or 4th on the interstates all the time)

Stock the can gear has a damper built in to reduce noise, (spring loaded gear halves that take up any chain slack/lash). Some people remove the damper to reduce rotating mass. Then the chain can make noise on the gears. Sounds like a full out racer then. |

Personally, I like the whine rather than having my engine sound like a dry clutch rattling all the time.

Guess I didn't have the brain started this morning when I wrote that. My old Hawk is the only bike I have with chains, everything else is gear drive ... as it is mean to be
Also agree on the whine versus rattle. The VFR I know with the mod sounds like it has a Ducati dry clutch when sitting next to me at a light. Sounds like it is shaking itself to pieces. |

i found a website from germany, a rc51 fanatic has, some stuff for sale, and shows pics and a hit n miss how to on removing the silencers, but, im kinda leary of doing it, for the simple facts of not knowing how loud it would be afterwards, and not being able to go back to the way it was, without spending about $1000 on new drives. does it make the gear drive whine much more pronounced? im just kinda guessing (from my years of being a motorhead) that a "quiet" gear drive for a car is probably comparable to a stock rc51, and a "noisy" gear drive for a car would be comparable to a '51 running with no silencers? a noisy gear drive is borderline unbearable... im not sure i want that much whine
fwiw, the #7 and #8 on the fiche are the actual gear drives, from what i gather of the pics this guy has, theres some type of silencer gear on the camshaft sprockets, on the bottom gear of each of the gear drives, and another on the crankshaft sprocket itself. all the crap it shows that he took off, it might get another pony or 2 due to less rotating mass?!?!?! http://www.honda-rc51.de/verspannungszahnraeder.htm

(they are the outer casing for the gear stacks). Once removed, there is NO MORE WHINE, just the very loud clanking sound of straight cut gears against each other (thus my comment about the dry clutch sound). On the couple I have heard, the sound is much louder than the race exhaust system on the bike due to the frequencies and amplitude involved and IMHO makes the bike sound like it has a serious internal problem. |

| Not all the time, only when the cams have no load, like at idle. |
