| Race wheel questions? sitting here running sims and spending money in my mind...
What is a good brand of wheel for RC51's?
Where is good places to buy rims?
Is there wheels available that can be street ridden yet have the great weight savings?
Do all after market rims use different sprockets? |

| Re: Race wheel questions? If you want to use them on street and track, personally I'd stick with stock. Spend your money on Ohlins forks or something instead as the forged aluminum wheels aren't enough lighter to justify the cost, and I don't like magnesium for the street (for several reasons).
If you want some track only wheels, I'd recommend forged magnesium Marchesinis. They're about $2700. Totally blingtastic. |

| Re: Race wheel questions? Carbon wheels are definitely not allowed for racing, not sure about trackdays. Like ltl said, I'd stick with stock unless you're going for bling. Which is entirely possible.

My only reasons for keeping the streetable are to test and break in legally and MAYBE get to ride with Dad when he moves back to this hoorid place
I also looked at some Mag/Carbon Dymag and they claim streetable but I have to admit Carbon seems to easy to screw up |

| Re: Race wheel questions? Ooops next question
Is it a bad idea to only get one wheel? To ease into the $$ I could do only the rear first (biggest weight saving) |

| Re: Race wheel questions? I like the marchesini because they are highly proven, they are anodized (paint hides cracks) they are forged, and they are simply the market leader. Magnesium is far more brittle than aluminum. Abtech had one broke mounting tires. I don't want some hack at a shop spooning tires on my $2700 rims. Race track tire guys only. I had PVMs, and not only are there reports of their mags cracking, the magnesium cush drive is also insanely heavy due to the bearings they use. At least this weight was focused on the centerline of the wheel, and didn't impact MOI too badly.
Carbon basically has no means to non-destructively test for cracking. There are several reports of failures with the BST wheels. Simply not worth the risk.
Most of the time, these wheels are sold in sets. |

| Re: Race wheel questions? SoB, I highly recommend you buy Matress's wheels. That is a smoking deal. Then you can keep a set with street rubber, and a set with the track stuff. You also have a cheap spare if you wad those up. http://www.fireblades.org/forums/sal...et-locker.html |

I have two sets of 1000RR OEM wheels for my track bike and I they are scratched quite badly because an incompetent mechanic has chanced tires. The lazy bastard actually did let me run on badly worm Pirelli slicks even though there were loads of fresh one's available and this may have contributed to my recent bone-mangling highside. The only thing protecting his sorry ass is the fact that the rider and mechanic are same person in our one-man team
And yes, scratching Marchesini's is very, very bad for your karma But if you go aftermarket, I'd recommend going to mags also. For alu you will pay about 2/3 for what you pay for mags, but the weight savings really are not that big.
Mattress's deal is really insane, I paid twice the $$ for my 2nd 1000RR wheel set and I though I got a bargain. |
