Buying '00 - '01 RC51 (SP1)

Hi,

I'm looking at two SP1s (a 2000 and a 2001 model) with a view to buying one...Both bikes have around 25,000Kms on them, aftermarket cans, and one has a PC3 & rearsets.

Just thought I'd check in and see if there was anything in particular I should look out for ? Is there any known problems in terms of wear and tear, maintenance, or anything else that I should pay particular attention to ?

Thanks for the help,

Spanky.

Re: Buying '00 - '01 RC51 (SP1)

I have about that (miles equivalent ) on my 2000, without any issues relative to reliability.

On my 2000, stock, it was very abrupt on-off throttle but was fixed with the PC3. I've heard that they had improved the calibration later on, but don't know how well.

Suspension was my other issue when stock. Very harsh ride, to the point of throwing me out of the seat over freeway expansion joints. This was fixed with on Ohlins shock and Dan Kyle reworked shocks. Completely transformed the bike.

These would be 2 things to watch for when test riding the bikes. If they aren't a problem, then you don't need to invest in the parts ... same with the PC3, maybe the one without didn't need it.

Other than that and some ergonomic adjustments (Seargent seat and Sato adjustable clip-ons to ease the wrists), and a couple more teeth on the rear sprocket, it is a very fun and comfortable ride ... for the sporty side of it.

Good luck.

I think the PC3 would be a big plus (have one on the RC and plan on one for the RR this summer) I would look at all the regular stuff on any sportbike. Also you might ask if he has done the soft rev limiter or flapper mod.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'll give both bikes a thorough going over and check for all the usual signs of abuse.

As for the PC3, sheepofblue, that's on the bike I like the look of the most. Its got braided lines, Valter Moto rearsets, and Micron Hi-Rise pipes (I know there are issues with these pipes regarding a potential loss of power and foot space for the rider - plus no pillions...that last point is probably a good thing - "sorry dear" !!).

The second bike has a Jardine 2 into 1 on it which I understand actually improved power...but that seems to be the only mod apart from polished rims.

I'll let you know how I got on once I've had the chance to check them both out.

Cheers, Spanky.

Re: Buying '00 - '01 RC51 (SP1)

I think they've covered most of the details, but I'll add this from your last post. On the RC51, 2-1 exhausts actually rob power. And according to this information, you're right about the Micron setup. There are definitely better exhaust setups out there, and can be fairly cheap being the "older" SP1 model. I have the Moriwaki hi-mounts and love them. They've got good power, but not too loud. Before that, I had Yoshimura low-mounts. Those were the loudest pipes I've ever heard on a street bike! And good power too... Either way, you can't go wrong! Get the most you can afford, but there shouldn't be more than a $500 - $1000 (US) price difference between a '00 and a '01.
