and how hard is it to get ride of the factory snorkle and flapper and what performace increases are noticed by doing so...right now i just have the hose unhooked and blocked off... |

| Re: what is this? ok...by doin so, though, does that get rid of the flapper? and if so, where does the vaccum hose for the flapper go, and what performance gains are rendered from the removal of the flapper and the upgraded snorkel?
i just realized what looks different....the screen is missing from the nose...can it be put on the new snorkel or is it really not needed? |

| Re: what is this? when you change it out you end up removing all the stuff with it, i.e flapper, diaphram, etc. If you notice your snorkel connects to the head of the frame so everything thats on that plastic now will be removed, as far as the vaccum hose you should plug it w/ a small screw. As far as performance, I cant give you a definate answer cuz I did the snorkel and a new airbox at the same time, but I'd imagine it helps alot as far as getting a bunch of air shoved into the air box, and it is a ton lighter! |

| Re: what is this? I'd have to go look it up again somewhere but as I recall, the flapper was primarily to quell intake noise at lower rpm's. It's open at idle, closes as the throttle is opened, then opens again at higher revs. I could be wrong on the details. Mine's gone and didn't notice any change in performance. |

| Re: what is this? no, it shouldent affect the streetability of the bike, and it might help w/ the power if you have a power commander and get it re-mapped. I like it, and you can really hear the air being sucked in the snorkel along with the fact that it looks pretty trick. |

Mine's gone and didn't notice any change in performance. | Correct: The flapper is designed (Thank you EPA) to rid the bike of intake air noise on WOT at certain RPMs.
By removing it, the bike looses a flat spot in the power ranges, between 5000-7000 rpms. It's visible on a dyno with a stock bike. It can be more noticable depending on what pipes or MAP you're running.
The mod can be as simple as disconnecting and plugging the vacuum line, to removing the flap altogether, and eliminating the "directional" plastic fins in the airbox.
Either way, it harms nothing, hurts nothing and doesn't contribute to Global warming. |

| Re: what is this? ive merely unhooked the vacuum line and plugged it with a screw. nothing more, nothing less, i did notice the throttle around 4k seemed a tad smoother after doin it. but is there more benefit to actually just replacing the whoel snorkel with an aftermarket one...and possibly a different air box? |

The airbox volume is only capable of being so much and the bike already gets more then enough air.
Replacing the airbox as well as the snorkel will increase and change the airbox volume and resonance, and that helps in making more HPs, at midrange to high RPMs.
You can actually unhook your vacuum line, Kelly, and place a BB in the hose, then put the hose back on so it doesn't look hokey hanging there with a screw in it. The natural (relaxed) position of the flapper (in the snorkel) is open anyway. Removing its vacuum source stops it from closing. |

What does the EPA have to do with the intake noises of motorcycles?
And what does the EPA have to do with that intake noise in all the other countries around the world? |

The Federal EPA mandates noise control on every vehicle produced for the USA. Look at any motor vehicle's intake system and you'll see intake mufflers for noise reduction. Noise is a federally controlled issue whether it be intake or exhaust not only in our country, but world wide. The Federal EPA writes most of the laws and mandates them for production of vehicles for this country.
MIght want to read it. You'll see where it covers intake/airfilter noise. EPA | Managing noise from vehicles
Vehicles are built to a standard, and the Federal regulations of the US (and Europe) are some of the strictest.
Did you think Enviromental Protection was soley a US entity? EUROPA - Environment - Guide to the approximation of EU environmental legislation Part2H. NOISE FROM VEHICLES AND MACHINERY
The only mandates that haven't carried over for a few other countries is the PAIR system, as they're exempt from Canadian and Australian RC51s, including a different ECU for Austrailian RC51, that yield a slight bit more HPs.....
