rc51 problems

ok i will sound new at this but i have a few questions i need help with. First what is the difference between the sp1 and sp2. Two i have owned my 2002 rc51 for 6 months now. I am living in pa and today was 95 degress and well thats where it starts. I was riding for about an hour when i realized the temp was at 240 so i pulled off at a gas station and began to investigate. The first thing someone that was with me noticed was that the little plastic piece that goes under the fairing was not installed. so i looked into it and well i ordered it today. besides this i filled up and continued to ride. the bike started to sputter and buck about 20 minutes later and the fi light came on solid until i accelerated. i thought i got bad gas so i bought some fguel injection cleaner and ran it thru no help. i changed spark plugs again no help. but it does run better when its cool less bucking and missing. so any advice you all can give me would help. thanks

Re: rc51 problems

240 is pretty damn hot. Where you in a bunch of stop and go traffic? Perhaps lugging the engine a lot? Maybe you need to drain the coolant and get some fresh coolant in there. Also, Moriwaki makes some radiator ducts that most of use that drop the temp about 10 degrees. Your bike is running to hot if you weren't riding in stop and go traffic for an extended period of time. The service manual shows you how to get a code for any FI faults. You need that code. If you aren't mechanically inclined take it to the shop and explain the situation thoroughly and have them investigate.

Edit: SP1 was the first generation RC51. It's designation was VTR1000SP1 in rest of the world. In 2002 came the second generation, VTR1000SP2 but still known as the Rc51 in the states. There were numerous tweaks done to the SP2, taller windshield, throttle bodies, swingarm, among other things. You have the SP2, so you have the best version.

Re: rc51 problems

Even for stop and go traffic 240 is too hot.

Is the fan running? It should go on at about 217F and off again around 209F (these numbers are from my 2000). If something blocked the fan, it will blow the fuse and the temperature goes up when in traffic.

You might also have something causing a lean condition (like the throttle-body boots leaking) that can make the engine run hot. Make sure those are in place and not leaking.

Good luck.

Re: rc51 problems

well i checked my thermostat and i think it was sticking. so im replacing it and i put blue ice coolant in it. well see whether that works. ok now onto another problem it is now bucking and sputtering and how do you check the fi codes it seems like its starving for gas. when i throttle it it seem to want to almost die and jump back on when i throttle it down. i have it broken down right now and im going to eliminate the power commander from it also to see if that is causing anything. i am also replacing the fuel filter and i cleaned the screen. the gas i pulled out was dark in color maybe it was bad i will let you know more in a couple of days when i get the parts. Any other ideas would be appriciated.

Was this bike setting up for a long time? If it was and the gas was dark you probably have clogged injectors also. You might try running some premium grade injector cleaner through it if so.

Re: rc51 problems

When fuel gets really hot it boils before it gets to the motor causing the bike to cut out and come back.
You might want to insulate the fuel line from the heat with heat wrap or similar.

Re: rc51 problems

ok so i figured out that my thermostat was bad and that helped a little it hasnt went above 222 now i read a few other forums where they said to reverse the polarity of the fan and it would help, so i tried this yeah right. while going down the road it worked great running at like 175, but when setting 230 not good. i also read to try two cool oil additive and this may help, who knows i will try it and let you all know. So now i will ask does anyone knwo where or how i can get and wire a manual fan switch i have heard that works great. Or i would like to change the factory thermo switch to one that opens at lower than 219. Also i heard that there was a different fan out there that can be installed. if anyone has info on wher ei can get any of these items let me know. Thanks everyone.

Re: rc51 problems

Motor and impellor from VTR Firestorm bolts straight into sp1 fan mounting and reverses air flow (blows out through the rad ).This is more efficient at slow speeds.Honda part no. for fire storm fan is 19020-mbb-003.You can also change the fan switch to bring the fan on at a lower temp. The original switch has an m16/1.5 pitch thread and this matches a lot of car fan switches in the intermotor parts catalogue.I chose 50455(apparently fits a Subaru 1800 xt) and this controls the coolant temp at 90 degrees centigrade when standing still. You will have to earth the second terminal to the bikes metal radiator mount(where fan is earthed)because 50455 has two terminals, whereas Honda OEM fan switch has one and earths through body contacting to rad.

Re: rc51 problems

do you have one or two fans, SP2 has one fan on each radiator, if you have only one fan then its an SP1.the discussion about fan reversal is endless and well covered.just keep moving and dont go into town
