RC-51 Dual Low Beam Headlights

Wondering if anyone knows of a mod to have dual low beam headlights on without having to keep the highbeams on all the time.

First of all, the highbeam is a "highbeam", due to the aim of the bulb and the surrounding prism behind it. No bulb is going to change that, 100%. From the factory, both bulbs are identical, (H7's - single filement, 2 tabs/prongs, with adaptors to 3 prong H4 plugs)

You can't have a real "Lowbeam" on the right headlight, due to the multidirectional bucket behind the bulb, but you can have something close.

Here's what you can do....

You can, however, have a dual headlight set up, but it involves replacing your high beam bulb, (H7) with an H4 bulb, and that requires cutting the mounting flange diameter down to fit in the H7 port, (H4 is larger) and ditching the adapter. (factory has an H7 bulb adapted to an H4 factory plug) There's an open port in the factory plug, and you'll need that later.

Then, you tap into the low beam hot wire, (left side) and run a wire to the high beam bulb, (right) but attach it to the low beam tab. (H4 has 3 tabs: neg, low beam and high beam) This puts both headlights on, on low beam, with a slightly lower directional beam path.

Your right headlight highbeam is the same highbeam wire that you used before. You may have to move them in the plug to make sure they're correct.

This will give you 2 headlights on low beam, and both headlights on on highbeam, but now your right headlight is a dual filement bulb, and will shine slightly lower when it was just a low beam.

I have a yellow "fog lamp" bulb in my highbeam light, so my highbeam gives off a better night time appearence then a white light. This is from almost 1.5 years ago....

Re: RC-51 Dual Low Beam Headlights

you could also take another reflector that is low/high and mod it to fit in the opposite side. I am doing the bmw x5 dual xenon for one side, and yellow xenon projector in the other side. just need to find a donor headlamp to put it together

Re: RC-51 Dual Low Beam Headlights

i will make sure i take lots of pics.. I do have a set of Lexus IS300 hid reflectors, I bet they would work perfect for an rc51 low beam, but just like your factory lamp, its low beam only. If any one has some broken headlights they would like to donate, I would definately see if the lexus reflectors would work for ya. I know it will work in my 900rr with a little trimming.

The factory bulb "ports" in the headlights are for H7's. (small bezel, 2 prong/spades, single filiment bulbs)

The factory plugs on your harness, are for H4's. (3 prong, for dual filiment high/low beam bulbs, with a larger diameter bezel then the H7's)

In order for the H4 harness plugs to fit the H7 bulbs, the factory uses an adaptor. It's brown/black and is a hard plastic, like that "Bakelite" stuff. The adaptor is removable. You have to if you're replacing a burned out H7 bulb.

It adapts a 2 prong, narrow contact spade gap H7 bulb to a 3 prong, wider contact spade gap H4 bulb.

The factory H7 bulb is only a single beam and an H4 is a dual filiment bulb. Not sure which one is brighter, but they for 2 different applications.

By cutting down the H4 bezel (tin...easy with tin snips) and putting it in the headlight housing less the adaptor, the factory plug fits right on. You'll need to add a female spade and a new wire to utilize the other beam, since you now have a dual filiment bulb and not a single any more.

Is that better.................

aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh.i see said the young gwasshoppa...

ill just stick to the H7 then.

ive tried getting the headlights out on the RC, is there a trick to changing the bulbs. i cant seem to get the dang thing to turn to remove it...which part do i grab ahold of and turn to remove the bulb..i know this is a stupid question but i live by a "if it aint broke dont fix it" philosiphy and ive never had to actually remove a headlight for anything.

The bulb has a thin wire "retaining" clip that hold the bulb in. You need to remove the plug, then the rubber boot. The wire "Spring" runs on both sides of the bulb. After you unclip it and swing it out of your way, the bulb just pulls out of the housing.

Due to the position of the filiment, the bulb only goes in one way, so pay attention to the little tabs on the bulb flange when reapplying it into the bike.

After you take the rubber boot off, get a flashlight and look at the back of the bulb, and you'll see exactly what I'm babbling about, with the tabs, the spring clip and everything.... Once you do it, it's easier after that.

I just did this modification and there was a couple of things I was initially unsure about, but having done it, I thought I would provide a bit more clarification and a potential time saving method of accomplishing this mod.

As Rigor has previously mentioned, you need to tap the power wire from the left low beam bulb and connect this to the low beam prong on the new bulb, as well as connecting the stock high beam connector to the new bulb.

The low beam prong on the bulb is the middle one, and the power wire for the low beam is the blue wire. What I did is soldered a wire connection to the middle tab, then bent it out sideways so the existing high beam connector could fit on. To tap into the the existing low beam power, I stripped a bit of the wire connected to the new bulb, twisted it up, and inserted it into the positive connection for the low beam (blue wire) and then sandwiched it in along with the left low beam bulb. This way you don't have to hack/tap into any of your existing stock wiring, and everything is kept local to the new bulb, allowing you to revert to stock anytime without any permanent changes to your bike.

Hope this helps.
