04 RC51 Stalling At Idle And At Take-Off Help!

I have an 04 Rc51 that has about 1500 miles on it.. The bike has had problems with stalling before but not this bad.. Yesterday I was on my way home from the dealer and was stuck in traffic for 2 hours. The bike never ran hotter than 221 degrees.. It must have stalled about 4 times on me.. It stalled mostly when taking off at about 3K RPM with the fourth time almost would not start back up.. I looked at the battery connection and everything is tight.. I just added Two Brothers Titanium High Mount Slipons the other day and it seems to run great but there is a slight backfire or popping sound on decel sometimes.. I also just performed the flapper valve mod. Has anybody had this problem with their RC? What could the problem be? Thanks

Turn the idle up a bit to stop it from stalling. Both of my 51's used to do it. You need to have the revs like 1200. The poping is the polution control allowing the fresh air into the hot exhaust and it is re-igniting, almost like a backfire. Take that crap off and you lose about 5 pounds too.

Although if you just messed with the exhaust (as your post indicates), I would bet you have a leak at one of the junctions and that is causing the backfire.

Hey Guys. Thanks for your replies.. After examining the problem further, I did find that the left slipon was a little loose at the junction between the left slipon and the top end of the connecting pipe.. I removed the slipon and the gasket sealer fully and resealed it.. I will reinstall the slipon and maybe do the other side also and reseal both sides.. I will also set the throttle a little higher and see what happens.. I will keep you updated.. Thanks

One more thing.. Would you recommend using a hardening gasket sealant or a non hardening gasket sealant between the slipon and the top of the high pipe?

Re: 04 RC51 Stalling At Idle And At Take-Off Help!

Just removed my whole Two Brothers Titanium High Mount slipon system from headers back because I noticed that both sides were very loose and wiggled slightly from side to side.. The header clamps that came with the system were nice but the allen bolt heads stripped out before I could tighten them enough to secure the high mount adapter pipes.. Is there a worthy adapter clamp that I could buy at the hardware store or auto parts store that will work without stripping? Has anybody run into this problem before? Is there a better way to secure the slipons to the end of the high mount adapters besides springs and RTV? Thanks

Re: 04 RC51 Stalling At Idle And At Take-Off Help!

Well, so far so good.. I modded the stock exhaust clamps to open and close tighter and shimmed them with the new modded bracket provided by the Two Bros kit and 2 extra modded C clamps.. I also used the copper RTV gasket sealer on both lower and upper junctions.. I allowed everything to cure for 24 hours and it seems pretty tight now.. Now my only delema is figuring out how to modd the Can Holders? The ones that come with the kit are very flimsy and I am afraid that if I go over a bump, then my seal will be destroyed and as always "back to the drawing board"..

Are those the bent plate ones that just bolt to the frame and then the can hanger?

I've had pretty good luck with those once everything was tight, and once the exhaust clamps were tight, I never had an issue. My cans (TBR slipons) actually float a little on the extension pipes, held on only with the supplied springs, with no ill effect. I might get an occassional pop, but very rare. I would think as along as everything is in alignment and bolted down, you should be good to go.

Good luck.
