Do I need a power commander with new slips ons?

Hi guys/gals,

I just picked up a set of FMF TI slip ons. I got a killer deal on them . Is it going to hurt my bike if I do not put a power commander on it? Ive heard with the RC's that if you do slip ons without the pcIII it will make the bike run lean/rich? Is this true?

Thanks!

Steve.

PS

I meant "Slip ons" not slips ons

No, you don't NEED a PC with your pipes, however, in order to gain the benefits of aftermarket exhaust, other then just increased noise, a PC will give you that.

It'll also remove the jerkiness from the RC51 (throttle) and give you a better, smoother powerband, with no flatspots in the power range.

The RC51 runs rich enough that no damage will occur, but you might want to keep it in mind for the future. You won't regret it.

A PC, with a custom map (arrived at by before and after dyno-runs at an authorized facility) should be factored in to the price, time, and decision to upgrade the performance profile of any motorcycle. Without the baseline, you don't know what you've received as value for your purchase, and without the computer interface with real-time results, your new off the shelf map might reduce performance...Each bike is different; and a map that promised a 10HP increase from analyzing rider A's bike, might not produce any increase in yours, given the specificity of the maps regarding throttle position, rpm, the lack of blueprinting for the engines, etc.

The slip-ons, even if they don't increase performance, will sound great! I am not sure that you will really miss the extra performance on the street, if you are riding safely. All these bikes (RC-51s, 600s, 900s, 929s, 954s, and 1000s) are way too fast for 95% of the people who buy them. Take out the race-team purchases, and you are left with like less than 1% of the people who buy these bikes having the ability to really ride safely at the bike's limits. I am NOt one of those...But, I admittedly increased the performance profile of all 3 of my bikes anyway...Oops.

Good luck!

Re: Do I need a power commander with new slips ons?

When I got my slip ons added to my bike I actually felt like there was a difference in power. Not a hold lot but I could tell a difference. Now like one of the other guys said, I spoke to a pro racer that I know personally and he said the same thing pretty much that these guys said. No flatspots in areas where you don't need it and also the mapping system will help with fuel usage and distribution of performance. I am definitely adding the pc to mine this year.

Re: Do I need a power commander with new slips ons?

If you can, then get the PC and get it custom mapped. This is my before-and-after map (K&N filters, Micron race low mount cans, flapper mod and PC3r). The before map was witha Blueflame map off the Dynojet site (121BHP), after cutom mapping it made just under 130 (129.8 BHP).

The difference was massive, you can feel the extra 8 BHP on the arse-o-meter, but the biggest change was how much stronger and crisper it felt low down....the big hole in the torque curve at 5K RPM has been ironed out.
I had 2 maps made up......one for when i have baffles fitted in the cans...it now makes 124 BHP with the baffels IN...ie more than the standard map with no baffles!

Money well spent IMO!
