RC51 Engine Number?

Hello,
New to the fourm, so please exuse the Noob questions, but:

I have a lead on an RC51 engine from a salve company but need to know what I'm really getting. I want to buy an SP2 (that's what they say it is). Is there any way to verify the engine vin numbers to know if this is an SP2 (where are the numbers on the engine located)? I know that one of the major differences between an SP1 and 2 is that the exauhst port is oval on the SP2 which this appears to be (I'll attach a picture). Is there any other way to visually identify if this engine is an SP2?

Thanks

That's definitely an SP2 head.

But, if the engine is in that frame, why not just have them take a pic of the VIN sticker on the right side, that clearly has the year printed on it, or send you the VIN?

00-01=SP1

02-06=SP2

The other ways you can tell externally are the intake ports are smaller on the SP1, due to smaller throttle bodies: 54mm SP1 VS 62mm SP2

Despite that, if you look at your own picture, to the left of the exhaust port, you'll see a casting number:

It's identical to the casting number on my SP2 engine:

and here's a pic of the SP2 exhaust gasket I just replaced:

Re: RC51 Engine Number?

Rigor,

Thanks for the information. I went ahead and purchased the engine. I just really wanted to make sure since the seller was not overly familiar with the RC. What is a good price range for an RC engine? This is from an '03 with a claimed milage of 5,672.

Thanks again

I've seen good engines go anywhere from $400-700+ depending on if Throttlebodies are included, all the way to complete harnesses and ECU swinging from it....

If you paid in that range, you did good. I recently ran across a dealer with a NEW, in the crate SP1 engine for sale that they Ebay'd, and had it returned, because they sold an SP1 engine, representing it as an SP2...

This was a Honda dealer, mind you........ He offered it to me for $1000.
