| Is an RC51 really what I am looking for? First of all I would like to say hi to everyone. Second is for my loaded question.
Currently I own a 1997 CBR 600 that has had some mods done to it. I don't do any track riding mainly because I don't live anywhere near one. I am interested in getting a liter bike though because of that want for more power. I dont feel the need for the speed of the 1000RR and my 600 spedo already reads 165 top end right now. I know that is off but no reason to go faster than that anyway.
I came across a pretty good deal on a 05 RC51 (05 8500miles $7000) the bike is in great shape. Love the look, the sound, and the fact that not many people have it.
I have been reading all of the threads about the RC and how some advise against it as a commuter/every day bike. I would be selling my 600 and just owning the RC. How many of you own more than an RC and if you do own more than one bike what do you ride for just an every day bike? I am 6'2" and dont think that the RC would be uncomfortabe. Is the RC what I really am looking for or would the 1krr be more of what I want?
Not too many twisties in my area either. I imagine I will be considered a squid/poser. The interest is there but the sport isn't where I live.
Seriously looking for advice from riders far more experienced than I. Sorry this is so long winded. Thank you all |

| Re: Is an RC51 really what I am looking for? I love both my 929 and my RC-51.
I use the 929 as the main daily driver, but mostly because I have had it for 6-years, and I am really comfortable on it...I just got the RC this winter, so I am still on the learning curve concerning basic operation. I can certainly see it becoming my daily driver, and retiring my 929 to weekender/poseur track bike status, so have at it. I found that they are drastically different bikes, so CBR R F is absolutely right: sit on both, test-ride demos at a dealer, and then select the one you enjoy more. |

| Re: Is an RC51 really what I am looking for? Regarding your posere line. I think either the 1krr or the RC has the ability to give you that rep. I havnt ridden either the bikes personally but my uncle has a '02 RC51. He upgraded from a '86 VFR750 and commutes on it frequently. He loves it. With as good of a deal as that is I dont think i would pass it up. |

You want a bunch of people that know dick about you, to give you advice to you regarding what bike is best for you, and all we know about you is that you're 6'2" tall..........??
Ok..........

Nothing wrong at all with the machine. How can't ya love it? 160+ HP, map interchangability and al the go-fast goodies in the world...
My point is: Joe-Blow comes on the forum and asks us......US.....what bike is best for HIM, and all we're told is he's 6'2" tall..............
If people would do a little research on their own and not ask a bunch of folks that know NOTHING about them as to what bike was best for THEM, wouldn't that make more sense?? |

How's that? | Well, speaking of DICK I was just asking for general advice based on what other people have and like them selves. I have been doing my research and have picked up on a few things but notice that there was a lot more advise to be had from others that actually own the bike than just reading a damn magazine or short article that really doesn't cover what the **** I was asking! If I was looking for the fasteds bike I would think about a G-S-X-R but the "posers" as you would say always go for the popular bikes and not what fits them and their style. I know I didn't give much to go off of but being new to something and feeling it out is all part of that ah **** whats it called.... learning curve. Sorry I'm still not up to your speed. Thanks for your input though, DICK! |

And that's my point: Again, you want someone else to recommend something, with knowing nothing about you, other then your feelings get hurt quickly like a 3rd grade girl.
You title: Is the RC51 really what I'm looking for?
What do you want to do with the bike?
Where are you going to ride it?
How long have you been riding?
What's your riding level?
Are you only going to commute with it?
I see, obviously no trackdays... Why do you want a 1000 liter bike again???? You say for more power, yet your CBR600 has more power then you'll ever use. If all you do is commute, and ride on the street, you'll never use/see 3/4 of the performance that that bike has to offer. BUT yet, you want a 1000cc bike... makes no sense, unless you're a poser.
If you want to update your bike, (1997 is old in bike years) and kill 2 birds with one stone and get something that's not only plain fun to ride, but screams LOOK AT ME, then be honest about it and say so.
At 6'2", there's vertually a minimal height difference between a 1000 and a 600. I'm 6'1", and ridden them both. They're designed for performance, not comfort.
You said yourself, you don't feel the need for more speed, but then why the need for more Horsepower? You contradict yourself. Read your own post......
I'm one of the first persons to jump forward and help someone out, but coming to an RC forum and asking RC owners what they think about the RC51, is like going to a pimp and asking him if his girls are the best. Of course they are....... Do I think you should own an RC51? I think everyone should own one. I'm biased.
If you searched at all, you'd see just recently (monthly at that) a whole bunch of "likes" and "don't likes" were posted when someone else asked the very same question you're asking. Here one... 2002 + Honda RC51 Owners
Asking people if a certain bike is right for you, and providing them with little to no information is a waste of time. Buying a motorcycle is a personal choice based on utilitarianism, function and performance for a specific use. You don't buy a cruiser to do trackdays, and I wouldn't buy an RC51 to only ride to work.

| Re: Is an RC51 really what I am looking for? Alright there is more of an answer that I was looking for. By all you have said there I can understand that I am not able to ride the bike to its fullest. I have about 7 yrs of riding exp and I guess that the looks, sound, and way the bike rides felt pretty good to me but if it is out of my league I can handle that. I have no problem hearing that I have no business on a liter bike if that is the case. No, I don't have ANY track days at all so I guess that would put my riding level pretty low then for a sport bike like that. Sorry I wasted your time. I'll stick with the 600 thanks |

I'll stick with the 600 thanks | Nobody's saying you shouldn't be on a liter bike, but todays 600s are by far, not to be underestimated. The difference between a 2007 600RR, and a 1997 CBR600 is staggering.
YOU need to decide what it is you want. I used to steer people towards 1000s, saying that you'll get tired of the 600s. Things are changing....
If you want a liter bike, what I say shouldn't matter. I love my RC51, but it's flogged at race tracks and sees little street duty. If I had to do it all over again today, I might have selected a lighter, more nimble 600...... |

| Re: Is an RC51 really what I am looking for? Haven't had a chance to ride any of the new 600's. Been kinda stuck in the armpit of the world for the last year and a half so... I will take your advice and test some of the newer bikes when I get home and I'll go from there. If the new 600's are anything like you and others make them sound I'm sure I am in the wrong forum and should be asking questions else where. I'll leave the liter bikes to the more seasone vets, get some more exp, and maybe in the future some track time to see how I fit in with people that have more time on a bike than I do. Thank you for setting me straight. |

| Re: Is an RC51 really what I am looking for? First. There is no such thing as a stupid question. Sorry, I teach University, and if I answered my students' questions like you're treating the OP, I'd get bounced on my assay, and deservedly enough. Lighten the phuck up, as you don't have any experience whatsoever compared to me and some of the other riders on this board.
When I was looking to upgrade to a sportbike, what I noticed was that on the used market locally the 600's were going for roughly what the liter bikes were, they weighed about the same and put out more power. The 954 was an obvious choice (I am quite vertically challenged) and is more than I would normally use and is sufficient to get me into a fair amount of trouble. That said, I enjoy it, and like to have a bike that makes me increase my skill. I have twisties nearby and love my bike to death.
Just because there are no mountains in Minnesota (you are the first person I have heard who doesn't like it there) doesn't mean you can't ride the bike you want. Do you honestly thing the Busa's and their pals are that much faster than the literbikes? Why would anyone need that much power? They don't, they want it. You got the skills (7 years on a sportbike counts for a great deal in my book). I can't tell you which, I never rode the RC51. Whatever gives you the bling you crave. Who gives a phat phuck what a bunch of strangers on the internet say anyway? All I can say is that both bikes are Hondas, which means they'll likely be built right and work well. |
