hesitation down low

Hey y'all, ive tried to read up on this as much as possible, and still have yet to get my battery tested. I just picked up a 03' rc51 with 800 miles on er, I keep getting a low speed hesitation/ lurch when releasing the clutch aorund 1500 rpms, if i keep the rpms past 3 it wont happen, but coming out of a light with a car in front of me that can be rather difficult.

I also rode my friends SP1 and his had no similiar problem

I have tried fuel injector cleaner/ tightened battery terminals/ changes plugs/ and went through 2 tanks of gas.

The RC51 is geared high from the factory. the 16/40 gearing on it makes for a great top speed, but crappy when pulling out. I'll have to assume your friend's SP1 is stock geared as well.

Another part of the problem, is the clutch is either in, or out, with very little freeplay or feedback when compared to other bikes. Add the clutch function plus the high gearing and it's a bitch sometimes....especially on an incline.

The BIGGEST issue, is If you're releasing the clutch at 1500 rpms, that's too low. My bike idles at 1500.... facory recommends 1200-1400.....

Feathering the throttle at clutch contact, then accelerating works the easiest for me.

Do yourself a favor and change your gearing to the desirable 15/41 set up, (your old chain is new enough and will fit over the new gears) and you'll fall in love with the bike, and notice a seat in the pants difference with acceleration, as well.

After that....let's see if I can get you to buy the rest of the stuff to make you love the bike even more.

Re: hesitation down low

sorry i did not describe everthing. even after fully realsing the clutch low, it will hesitate and lurch all the way till about 3k. the SP! was stock gearing with full akaprovic. and his did not have that problem at all. going through parking lots and such are a PITA because of this lurch. but i will try to get the gears and see what happends

Gearing will help. A Power Commander will clear up the rest of the jerkiness in the low end. What you're describing sounds perfectly normal.

Go to rc51.org, check out the free mods and do them, and invest in a PC.

Re: hesitation down low

+1 get some gearing. evne just -1 up front will help some. but it wont take it away all together, but it will make it a bit easier. then add the power commander and enable the accel pump feature on the PC..so basically do exactly as rigor says and it will be a bike you cant get enough of..the low speed "herky-jerk" is very normal on the big twin. mine used to do it as well. i hated riding thru small towns with 25MPH speed limits. even in first gear it would jerk, totally normal. in stock trim ( stock gearing) i found that 6th gear on the highway was totally useless for anything below 120MPH, it just didnt get the rpms up hihg enough. with simply going -1 up front not 6th gear isnt needed till around 100MPH on the freeway lol.
