Couple Questions from a Newbie

Ok. I picked up a 2001 RC51 on Fathers day and I have a couple questions. Obviously its new to me, I have previously owned a Honda F4, a GSXR 600, and a Kawi 636 in that order - I loved the 636 but it was time to upgrade. Anyway, on with the questions.
1) I have a full Yoshi exhaust with a power commander (mapped). I notice that pulling from a dead stop the bike can be clunky - I can compensate for this easily enough by keeping it throttled a little longer, I am just wondering if this is normal.
2) I do commute on the bike (I like to use it whenever I can) I am looking to add the 2nd fan to the other radiator for cooling in traffic. If I just purchase a used fan unit will it mount up directly or do I need to modify the brackets?

Lastly, since I am new to the board I will post up a picture of my new baby.

Re: Couple Questions from a Newbie

What you are feeling could be something as simple as gearing, 1st gear is very tall on oem gearing so if its stock I would swap out for a 520 conversion with 15/42 or 15/41 gearing. As far as the temp I would take out the oem coolant and use Engine Ice or Water Wetter first, you can always reverse the polarity on the left side fan and install a switch so you can turn them on anytime you want, but I would just do the coolant and go from there.

Its not stock gearing - and I am pretty sure its not the gears, it seems more like engine shake. If you dont control the clutch carefully it will knock pretty hard and could even stall. As far as the coolant goes thats a good idea, but I only have one fan (SP1) so that was the question, shoul I install the 2nd- and does it just line up or will I have to custom fit it.

Re: Couple Questions from a Newbie

the engine shaking is common of the SP1 and SP2 that lurch that you feel on take off is something that you can overcome with a little more throttle or work the clutch a little different. but also like belowme stated the stock gearing on these bikes is quite tall and you will NEVER get to use all os 6th gear. try a little gear change and see what a difference it makes. i dropped a tooth on the front to a 15 and notice a big difference in ridability. you could go up one more in the back and make it a little better. up 2 in the rear i think is a little much for the street though it makes the bike perfect for the track.

as for the fan dont worry with it at all. these bike tend to run at temps around 220-230 in the summer. and its track proven that under hard riding and high speeds, the fans restrict air flow causing the bike to get even hotter. many track riders or hard street riders will take their fans off. so try engine ice first and see how it does.
