Re: What should the Temperature on my RC51 be reading normally?

I have seen that when I ride on a major highway even when moving fast mine will run @ 229, as soon as I get off the highway it will run anywhere from 180-220. I think the temp of the road makes the air down there much warmer so it doesn't cool as well.

That is interesting, completely backwards from mine. The 51 must be an odd machine. As long as I am cruising anywhere from 55 up my temp basically holds right at 175-180. It doesn't matter if it 45 degrees or 95 degrees outside. As long as I am moving along it stays within a 5 degree range. The moment I slow it starts going up and in stop and go traffic my cooling fans come on at 220 degrees and it stays between 210 and 220 degrees.

same here, as long as im moving on the fwy its usualy around 175-179. once on the streets its around 210-220, but then stop and go traffic its gets well above that, 240+

i dont have fans btw

Re: What should the Temperature on my RC51 be reading normally?

The RC51 is notorious for running hot due to the V-twin configuration and side mounted radiators.

I run high 170's to mid 180's in the twisties, and up to about 215-220 in traffic at like 75degrees outside.

That part I understand. I don't get why his bike runs hotter rolling down the highway than in traffic.

Re: What should the Temperature on my RC51 be reading normally?

I am thinking of removing the radiator fan to improve airflow over the left side rad. Anyone done this? I never hear it come on any way.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it runs hot in traffic too, just as hot, it has never gotten over 230 though.

Re: What should the Temperature on my RC51 be reading normally?

Average op temp relies more on speed traveling & outside temp. On the freeway in stop & go traffic when it's 95 outside I'll see 220-235. With Sato bonzai's it nearly fries my butt & the back of my legs. Normally though, when the temp's under 90 the fan kicks on at 217 and gets the temp back down to around 210. Under 80 outside and the bike will stay under 200.

When I first got it though I didn't know the coolant wasn't full and it got up to 249. The temp started blinking - freaked me out. Thought I was going to warp the heads and blow the head gasket! Shut it down and never let it get anywhere near that since.

Re: What should the Temperature on my RC51 be reading normally?

Racing without fans, at a delayed start, I hit 223 F with outside temp of 82.4 and track temp of over 100 F. Race pace generates 215 F with this ambient temp.

Cheers

Re: What should the Temperature on my RC51 be reading normally?

the problem is that the fans arent set to come on until it hits 218. They have to do that to get the bikes to pass emissions requirements. The trick is to have the fan come on sooner, like 190 and then in traffic it wont climb any higher than 200 or 205. I have an SP1 and I just got a lower temp switch.

not so easy on an sp2.

Mine runs about 190 on the hwy and about 210 in traffic with the fan on.
