Clutch issues after driveway mishap

So the RC took a spill a couple of days ago in the driveway and one of the casualties is the master clutch assembly. The reservoir got knocked off and all the reservoir fluid spilled out. I have examined the reservoir and it doesn't appear to have sustained any damage, cracks or otherwise. I reseated and refilled it and was not getting any pressure, so I bled the system... again and again. Still not getting any pressure.. one thing I did notice is a few small bubbles seem to come up into the reservoir when I push the clutch lever in.. it almost seems as if fluid is being partially pumped back into the reservoir when the lever is pressed.

When I bleed the system from the slave cylinder, no bubbles come out at all, and fluid is sucked down into the system from the reservoir. I'm following the following procedure when bleeding.

Bleed hose connected to bleed valve

1. clutch lever is squeezed, then bleed valve is opened.. fluid comes out of the hose.

2. while clutch lever is still squeezed, valve is closed completely and lever is disengaged..

I can squeeze the clutch lever all day and no pressure is coming through the system.. I'm wondering if a valve in the master cylinder is toast.

Any thoughts?

I'm wondering if the whole master cylinder is fried now.. any tips or thoughts?

if there are no leaks it should be okay. but instead of opening bleed nipple after you pull in clutch, open it and then pull in clutch then close and release lever. or you may need to get a pressure bleeder to suck fluid thru.

Re: Clutch issues after driveway mishap

I do not know if this can be done on a Honda... has anyone ever tried a backward bleed? Sometimes we bleed from the brake to the master cylinder/reservior. It takes a little bit of pressure and a little thought into manufacturing a pressure apparatus, but it usually works to get all trapped air out of the system. I have done it on cars but never had a need to try it on a bike (never had any brake issues). Also, ensure you R2 any o-rings in the reservior/master cylinder.

Wow, nearly same thing just happened to me. Same except for the mishap. I replaced sprockets and had the same air issue (in the resevoir) in fact I got the same response that nothing is broke. It is not broke, just needs to be bled completely. You are bleeding the system correctly as I did. Are you using anything to catch the fluid at bleeder? I could not get it to work that way. I used a small hose to attach to the bleeder. That way it has fluid on top of bleeder in hose resisting air from re-entering system. I had a buddy help so one can keep the resevoir full of fluid and pump the clutch and one can use a wrench on the bleeder. It only takes a couple pulls to empty the resevoir, keep an eye on that! Prior to the hose, I had tried to do this almost 6 ounces worth of fluid. I only used like 4 ounces with the hose and it now works fine. Master mech at the local shop said he does not like the pressure bleeders as they work too fast allowing air in also. This is his way and it worked for me.
Good luck

Re: Clutch issues after driveway mishap

thanks for the responses guys.. I think I might try an adaptation of the method you used.. I'll get a hose long enough that pumps the fluid from the bleeder back into the reservoir (it's all new fluid at this point) and just keep on cycling the fluid along until I start to get a bit of pressure.

Re: Clutch issues after driveway mishap

well.. I followed the directions on opening the bleeder first, then pumping, then closing the bleeder, then releasing.. cycled the fluid through quite a few times and finally got pressure back..

thanks for the tips everyone, much appreciated... now I just have to wait for that new mirror to arrive..
