ok heres the deal. was searching for an exhaust and ran across a video clip of a guy who was running an open exhaust on his rc... i actually thought it sounded way cool.. he had basically taken his stock cans and cut the ends off and gutted them.. what kind of ill efects would this have on engine performance and could any of it be gained back using a power programer

Exhaust/Mufllers do a few things for you. First it provides backpressure to some degree to give you some added low end power. Second, it will quiet the bike down a little (comfort for you and those around you), and depending on your local laws (noise ordinances) may keep "the man" from stealing your hard earned money in the form of a ticket/citation. Open exhaust systems do tend to backfire more often and a Power comander with custom tuning may be able to eliminate a lot of it. An open exhaust will give you more top end usually though.

AHHHHH please don't emulate the idiots on Harleys with straight pipes I might have to listen to it as I am in Huntspatch also (I am not a big exhaust noise person but have been told the Akrapovics on mine sound good. As to exhaust I have not heard of heavy handed enforcement in this area for noise, though if you are riding like a fool they may tack that on for an extra kick (Madison may do something also as they are morons)

for a very clean and high end system I have the Sato Carbon Ti slipons on my 05 RC. from what I have read there is very little gain for a full system so that would depend on your pocket book. As for me, I dont like open systems.

Don't do it! There is a guy here on a Yamaha R1 that has his two high mounts off and it is loud! Plus everyone laughs at him when he comes around to ride with the group....behind his back of course.
There is nothing to be gained performance wise but you will get alot of noise....

Every engine is tuned with specific exhaust parameters. Removing the silencing portion of the exhaust system will accomplish a few things:
1) It will devastate your low end hp and torque. A Power Commander will not be able to rectify this.
2) It MAY improve the power at the top of the range...although I don't think by very much.
3) It will get you ridiculed by almost everyone. Other riders will laugh at you and everyone else will just hate you.

If it were that easy, people would be selling hacksaw blades instead of $1000-1500 full-boat Ti exhaust systems.
If you want to get that V-twin sound economically, look for a set of slipon mufflers from a reputable manufacturer.
Aluminum cans are usually cheapest.

Reputation Power: 3 | Re: really dumb question new to the rc 51 I have a pair of Erions standard mount black aluminum and they are too loud for my taste. they came with the bike when I got it. But with the exception of a little poping here and there they work great and they match the 02 black anodized frame/swingarm.
When I got the bike I had never heard of Erion and after some searching I found out that they were US RC51 and Firebade exhaust specialists.
Anyone else has any experience with them?
From looking at dyno charts it seems that HRC had done such a great job that there was very little gain with any exhaust worth the money. I suspect people generally bought aftermarket ones for the looks and maybe a slight weight loss.

I did a lot of reading before I bought my set of Sato Carbon Ti Banzai Mount Slip on's and I have to say that I absolutely Love them. They saved bookoo weight, look incredible with my 05 black paint, and sound incredible! as for Power gains, while reading I kept seeing people write that power gain was negligible (like 2-3 hp) and only with a Power Commander. I have not put mine on a dyno to check, but I have been very happy with what I have.

I have old jardines that came with my RC51 and i like em a lot but i took the cans off to sand them to give em a new brushed look (used 400 grit came out good) and i rode it today w/out the cans just for kicks and i couldnt stand it. Absolutely terrible-and this is from some one who drove around a 5.7L V8 Firebird with an open exhaust halfway down the car for months. I went right back to work so i could finish the cans to get em on same day cuz i ride just about every day.

I'm rollin with D&D's on my SP1 and I love em. I'm sure I'm that guy "everyone hates" but I don't care. I think they sound just as good as all the others when cruising but when you open it up there loud as hell. But still nothing like open exhaust.
And don't let the backpressure thing fool you cause its all b.s.

I have Erion's on my Super Hawk and simply got tired of the noise as did my riding partners. When I picked up my RC51, I decided to leave the stock system in place and just invested in gearing, suspension and a Power Commander. Works for me and I don't miss the noise after a 200 mile ride day........ |

I got the Yoshimura RS3 stainless slip on's, I got them from -Z- on a great deal, got the pc3 and had it tuned and dynoed, other than K & N's and the flapper mod it put 120Hp to the rear wheel, Satos make more Hp and don't back fire as much as the Yoshimuras do, and all tho i know the Yosh pipes are great quality, (I was in there training their CNC foreman on new mill turn) the Satos are a notch up in every way, but you get what you pay for, Titanium it self cost 5 times what stainless goes for, at least 5 times.
Anyways... Yeah.... don't go with the straight pipes way too loud, I think my pipe's back fire is too loud at it is.

I too have a set of Erion racing cans. The original owner wanted to represent Erion Racing on the 2002 RC which won championships.
The problem I have with "getto" pipes is they can be heard for miles and serve little performance purpose. Save your money and get some good cans that have some packing in them. Even Harley is making their new bikes quieter because of the bad PR from owners and open exhausts.
I do like the fact deer can hear you coming and stay off the roads with a can. I've found this with people I ride with who have stock exhaust. "Did you see that deer? Well, no"
I'm sure there's a lot of people who are looking for stock mufflers who want to keep their bikes for collector reasons. Don't cut em up!
