finished painting my rc51

Hello Everyone,

Thought I'd drop off some photos of my bike for all of you to see. I just finished getting it put together after taking much longer than it should have (new babies will do that to your projects I guess).

I started out wanting to paint a Repsol replica but after researching it more and more I didn't like how it turns out on an RC51 - it looks great on a CBR1000 though!

So here's my interpretation off a milder repsol paint job....what do you guys think?

Nice paint job... Don't really like the color scheme but it does look like a nice paint job.. One thing is for sure you don't have to worry about anyone else having the same looking RC.. Nice looking RC also..

Re: finished painting my rc51

Thanks guys! good to hear some feedback. Unique - that it is. It's nice not pulling up to sea of bikes and have a dozen others lookin' just like yours. You don't find many RC's where I live anyway. I've had other bikes that were that way though. Over the years I've done many to look exactly like stock but that got old. I've had 2 bikes on TV and a couple of custom show choppers I painted (not really my scene but I enjoy painting them). I've also painted dozens of all-black bikes and that bores me to tears now...so I needed to try something I've wanted to do for years and here she is...

This was a tough call racer46 - while I was laying out the stripes for the candy orange & red, the bike looked beautiful just black with the silver wing over the titanium background color. If I get another RC51, I will definitely paint it just like that and forget the candy orange & red on top. Tough decision but I'd already got a lot of positive feedback from friends to do the candy colors so I continued...

Thanks for the comment!

Re: finished painting my rc51

Here's what my bike looked like when I bought it. Everything is still the same - gages, tank, radiator, everything except the clutch cover. Obviously I had to buy some stuff that was missing if you didn't already guess

All the fairings came from good old eBay - wrecked too of course.

Re: finished painting my rc51

Its not bad... not my style personally but its well painted!

If you stick a few Repsol stickers on it then it would look that bit better, looks very Repsol in style. Love the paint colors themselves.. really nice. Metallic right?

Nicely restored! She looks like she was in a bit of a state before you fixed her up :/ looks pretty sweet now

Ya, I'm thinking it needs a little more. I'm probably going to add the stock stickers to it and maybe a few from my Repsol kit that I have - which by the way is for sale if anyone wants it (hint, hint).

The base colors are metallic but the orange and red are made from putting a kandy clear over the base silver/titanium colors. A digital camera does a real crappy job of taking pictures of kandy's. My experience with them has shown the pictures will either be too dark or way off color. So the colors you see in the pictures above are close, but nothing like what it looks like in sunlight in person.

Thanks for the post!

Thanks RVT1000! I do like it but probably wouldn't do the same scheme again. I usually am much more reserved with my paint schemes and leave the wild stuff for show bikes. Have to try something different though every now and then just to get a taste of it...

Thanks for the post

Re: finished painting my rc51

I think you have a great looking one off paint job, and as hard as it is to get any Candy Paint job to look good, you did a very nice job. I agree that the Repsol stickers would just throw it off perfectly as it has that basic paint scheme. You live in Utah, and if you wanted to I know of a couple of places that can duplicate your repsol stickers in any color you want (carbon, metalic, etc.) that would take it even one step further as a "one off". VERY NICE JOB THOUGH!

Thanks skwyd! I can see you have some experience with Candy paint. It truly is a pain to paint any tri-coat colors! I'll keep you in mind on those stickers too. Ever do any track days at MMSP?

Re: finished painting my rc51

My 'second job' (for fun not pay) is at The Speed Shop in West Jordan and we just did a 68 Camaro in a HOK Candy Apple Purple that absolutely POPs in the sun. One of the sticker places is on State street in Murray just north of Fassion Place and I have seen some of their work on Mustangs and they do good work, and the other is "the Sign Guy" who is mobile and did our Racing Trailer for The Speed Shop. I havent gone to any track days yet, as I am just getting back into riding and have a health condition "STUPIDANDGOTFATIOSIS" that I am correcting. I do go to the AMA events and with the exception of Ben Spies walking away from everyone, it was AWESOME! I even noticed a novice RC51 bringing up the rear (couldnt miss the exhaust note as they went by).

I like it, not really sure why. reminds me of a repsol but different and combined with the honda wings. very nice job. You should find someone who wants a black one with the silver wings like you almost did.
