Valve "ticking" SP2

I have a 2002 SP2 with 6500 miles and all stock and at idle I can hear the valves/lifter tapping----not super loud but definately there. I also have a 2000 SP1 with 12000 miles Mig High Mounts-Power Comander. I can hardly hear any "tapping" The 02 runs fine---also oil change and no difference in volume. Is it possible that due to the stock very quiet mufflers I am hearing normal engine noise. I think valve adj is at 16k? Thanks

this is what i know and its not much...also hope its a help.

vavles will get tight on some bikes. when there is some play between the cam and the vavle you'll get that tick. quiet vavles maybe tight valves, maybe . tight valves are worse than slightly loose valves. 16k is the vavle adjustment spec. ive had a bike, a sv, that got the valves adjusted got it back and it ticked dealer said that it was set loose but it was still within spec and would quiet down over time, it did.
so maybe the 2000 is getting tight and the 02 is loose, but within spec

how do they run? tight valves will run like crap

Re: Valve "ticking" SP2

Thanks for your input Both bikes run great--the '00 is slightly quicker than the '02 but that may be due to the exhaust and Pwr Cmder. They both idle fairly smooth(@1200rpms) and have excellent throttle response! The '02(stock except flapper) hits hard at 600o/6500rpms and the '00 comes on at 5500 and pulls past 10k rpms.

Re: Valve "ticking" SP2

I know it's not an RC, but my Triple makes a ton of noise, every new guy that gets on thespeedtriple.com always asks about this. Ican hear the ticking up to about 4k too. It even got a little louder after I did the valve adjustment. I freaked out about it too, but there's probably nothing to worry about since the tendency is for the valves to tighten. I becmae pretty aware of the noises different bikes make and they all seem to chatter a little bit. With the triple I check the adjustment every winter, just because I can't ride it.

Has anyone done their own valve adjustment on an RC1 here? Is it easy? the Triple has a shim under bucket and I had to pull the cams to change the shims. Any special tools required? I hope to have an RC soon, and I like to do my own work.

Re: Valve "ticking" SP2

yeah I think I understand the valves will become "tighter" as they wear so I am not so worried anymore. These are my first RC51'S. My CRF 450 "ticks" a little too. Hey J-Pip---I will selling one of my bikes,,,,,,,,I am not sure which one yet. I will post here @ Christmas time with picts etc.

Re: Valve "ticking" SP2

Hopefully my Triple will have sold by then, I'm giong to try to wait till february or so to pick one up , but I'm sure when the Triple sells I'll develop an anxiety over not having a bike in the garage. I'm going to want an 02 or up though... I'll be watching

Re: Valve "ticking" SP2

Hey J-Pip Perry Brothers Honda World in Draper (I-15 and 106 off ramp) has an 05 stock black RC-51 for sale. It has 8500 Miles and I think they are asking 9999.00 for it.

That's good to know, thanks! Isn't that a new shop? Is there a Harley shop next to it? I may have to take a trip down there to check it and the onw on KSL out.

Re: Valve "ticking" SP2

The ticking is normal. My valves tick and are still in spec after 15k miles. Get Sato Banzai's like me. That should fix it.
