Flapper removal double check

Hey guys

Thanks for the great help!

The only thing I need to do is to remove the indicated hose and plug it right?

Can it cause any damage to the bike when its done like that?

Thanks

Re: Flapper removal double check

From what I understand, removing and then plugging the hose will stop the flapper actuation. So yes, that is all you HAVE to do. But... I would encourage you to remove the entire system. Getting those pieces out of the intake's stream of air will improve flow. I've removed the entire flapper system as well as the entire PAIR system and my bike runs great.

Re: Flapper removal double check

I agree that removing the entire flapper system is the way to go. So far all that I have done is to remove the vacuum line and plugged it. I have seen a bit more at the bottom end. The flapper stays closed until you get to 3000rpm not matter how hard you hit the throttle. This is a simple mod with a noticeable improvement.

Re: Flapper removal double check

Hey guys

I don't see the need to remove the whole flapper system. I can't see the big difference in airflow by removing the small Intake Air Duct Valve? Whats your take on this?

Personally, I just like to tinker. I don't feel I truly know something until I tear it apart and examine it. When I bought my '02 used, I put precisely 1 mile on it before it got tore down to the frame/engine. I cleaned it with a toothbrush after removing the PAIR/flapper systems, along with new shoes etc... To me, it wasn't about a big difference. It was about eliminating something that is unnecessary. The parts and tubing that I removed is just less that I'll have to work around or remove the next time it gets torn apart. As far as performance goes, it can't hurt. It may not make a big difference, but at least I know it isn't a factor anymore.

Thanks dude. One of the reasons I want to temporarily plug it is to be able to reconnect it easily to feel the difference in power.

Don't need it. Get the DK plugs and yank the whole thing. My bike ran way better once I got rid of everything.

Re: Flapper removal double check

bought my rc and rode for week and learned bought them and removed flapper set up and pair system also. Instead of using jb weld on pair system block of plates so you don't ruin them cut hose 3 inches long or so and 5 min jb weld end of hose and clamp so you only ruin hose and not motor plate. Also instead of buying expensive block of plates I went to marine department in mills fleet farm and bought mini compass for flapper diaphram block off plate and is nice to have compass will not interfere with guages or light if ya get one I have. Glued with black silicone to blend. Looks factory and nice feature. Enjoy

Re: Flapper removal double check

Also if you understand how the procedure works on moddin pair system and flapper valve? You should understand what I am trying to say if about the mods if you know what the process is. Ask me any questions if needed. may be easier that way. Later fellas

Re: Flapper removal double check

I can take a pic of pair system cap on front cyclinder I think we should be able to see it. Pretty simple to do. Now for the flapper valve block, it's just a marine compass that fits like a glove and then I used black silicone to seal and hide seal with black color to match plastic. I don't have photo shop to re-size pics is hardest part. Can anyone help me there. Not best with computers.

Re: Flapper removal double check

I did that route however once you read instructions on pair system let me know. Don't put jb weld directly on metal plate cause it's ruined then, cut hose short and glue end of hose and clamp to hold the pinch at end of tube. Ruin hose instead of pair system motor plate. Will get pics up soon. Thanks

Re: Flapper removal double check

To cover the holes left by removing the pair system hoses off the cylinder heads, all you have to do is buy a couple "thread protectors" from a hardware store. They are used to cover the exposed threads of bolts but they fit perfectly and are already sealed off. I added a thin layer of rtv to make sure it stayed put. I also used this same method to block off the voids left in the airbox.

Since my bike's in bits with a rusted out fuel pump (don't ask me....) I did the flapper removal as per the rc51.org link. Everything is spot on and as per the detailed instructions - but for one thing. Loosening the right radiator won't cut it - but undoing the retaining nuts for the oil cooler will make it a !@#$load easier as it allows lateral access to the nut that holds the solenoid valve in place. Otherwise no hitches, and I look forward to noticing the difference when it's all back together!

and while i'm at it, I'm about to do the pair removal as well. Question - with stock pipes/airbox/no PC111 etc will this require any tweaking to the ecu mapping?

Re: Flapper removal double check

Did you lift gas tank and air box? What air filters are you running? There is a air filter mod you can do since you are in there trying to get to solenoid for pair system by throttle bodies if going that route. I was gonna do that when I found K&N filters in used bike I bought. Cut spark arrestor screens off stock filters for more air flow.

Re: Flapper removal double check

Oh yeah your bike will run a bit leaner after doing mods. I did pair and flapper at once and did plug readings before and after and needed to adjust pc3 after cause she was lean and a bit cold blooded at start up manily was when I noticed difference.

Re: Flapper removal double check

Gas tank is off because it was leaking...... seal around the fuel filter/pump assembly was fitted badly and worn out - not to mention the fuel pump completely rusted out inside the tank. I guess the bike must have sat empty for a long time at some stage.

Haven't pulled the airbox off yet, so not sure what filters are in there. based on everyhting else I've found, i'll assume they're stock. My intention is to leave airbox/filter mods until when i get a set of pipes put on, unless there's something I need to do to balance out the pair/flapper removal.

If it'll run a little leaner that should be easily fixed with a tune/service.

Re: Flapper removal double check

Tuning is easy enough may not need to do if not dealing with pipe or air filters watch close when done. I bought a used dent free tank for my bike with a good fuel pupm in it and fuel pump in my other tank was just fine. So if you in need of a fuel pump in good used working shape make me a offer. Uninstalled and ready to be shipped. I accpet paypal or money order. Thanks
