D209 qualifier front - failure

Hi all,

After just 150miles of not very intense riding I have just discovered my
spanking new Dunlops D209 Qualifier front has a severe failure.
On the sidewall the rubber layers has disengaged from the tire construction.

Did anyone expirienced a simmiler problem?

Looks like a faulty tyre. Did you talk to your dealer about this?

Re: D209 qualifier front - failure

I've sent this to my Dunlop racing Buddy. I'll post his comments when I get them. Seems I've seen this type of tear before too but smaller. Maybe take a small probe and gently check the depth of the injury. It may be not deep. I'm sure if you take the bike to the dealer for inspection they'd replace it.

Bizarre almost look like a cut but if you have seen it before I have a hard time believing that Dunlop has a batch out that is that bad or everyone would be going crazy about it (odds of you getting two bad ones SHOULD be low). Interesting keep us posted on what you find out.

Sorry I should have clarified that. The similar cut I saw was on a car tire. My Dunlop guy got back to me and said basically a flaw can occur from time to time and the tire is definitely unsafe. He would have to see it to determine any more. I say, just take it back asap.

Is it possible that whoever changed the tire could've done that with the spoons?

Its not a cut, it goes almost an inch underneath in parallel to the side wall
exterior and upto the contact patch.
There is no signs of cutting or abropt force just the complete layers of rubber
disconnected from the construction (metal belts).

Sponns were not used, and there is the 1 inch depth and no signs of
pintching.

Re: D209 qualifier front - failure

Cool sounds like an isolated defect. Hopefully they will drop a new tire on you and all is well. You're right that if something had cut it (stand, tire changer, moron on the street, etc) that it would have not spread up between the plys, I was unable to see the interior separation in the photo (though I am sure it is there).

Thanks for the feedback

Yeh I had the same exact problem with the knife,
but I stopped using it because it kept puncturing my tires - SP2MAN you're the man.

I hated the qualifiers on my bike. Get different tires.

Amazing, I love the Qualifiers. For the street they warm up fast and are sticking as hell. Maybe the only complaint is short life. Always figured that was the nature of the beast though.

Re: D209 qualifier front - failure

I put a set on my F4i before I got the RC and went from a set of pilot powers (not 2ct) and couldn't tell a difference after they were warm, but when cold felt like they slipped a little more. When I got my RC I almost highsided 2x with it (not used to the tq, not sure if it was the qualifiers or not) when the tires weren't completely warm. I ride a little smarter now, but have found that when I just accelerate hard in a strait line the Corsa III's I am running now will not spin up like the Qualifiers would unless I chop the throttle and get on it hard again.

Once warm, the qualifiers will absolutely not spin up on clean roads. The front always comes up. I actually wish they would for fun sometimes. Dusty roads work good for that.

From the very short impression I had with them they gave a very stable
yet egile nimble feeling.
And yes they were very simmiler to the PP in feeling.

Re: D209 qualifier front - failure

wow, I didn't think they felt anything like the PP's. When I first got on PP's they were very confidence inspiring. The Corasa III's are the same way, except they make me feel like a squid because there is more tire to use and I can't use it all on the street.
