Help...RC starting problem

Hello Everyone, I've got this 2000 RC I'm working on that wont start. The gas had turned and the inside of the tank had started to rust...I've drained the tank and scotch-brighted out all the gunk I could reach from inside the fuel pump hole... So after cleaning it all up and and adding fuel, I can't get her to start. The last time it ran was 2 years ago, before suffering a work related injury that sidelined me for a while.

Anyway, my relay clicks but the pump does not prime. I've since removed the pump and plugged it into the harness to confirm that it does not prime. So, did my pump just stop working from inactivity or am I missing somethin?

Also, I put a voltmeter to the wires leading to the pump. Of the three, I get a small blip of voltage from one wire twice as the relay clicks on and then off again. The other wire is dead and the third, I believe is a ground.

I think my next step is to jump 12v direct to the pump on a workbench but its perplexing that I get only a blip of voltage from the harness. This bike has under 5000 mi on it so I'd realy like to here it roar again!!
Thanks in advance,
Reb

Reb, i would try reseting the tip sensor. If your not hearing the fuel pump prime after turning the ignition on, this could be the prob. The sensor should be mounted on the forward most part of your rear fender(on bottom). You'll probably have to remove the seat to access it. Simply unplugging and plugging it back in should reset it. Give this a shot before tearing things apart or spending big money on a fuel pump.

Re: Help...RC starting problem

Thanks for your help guys... Turns out it was the fuel pump. I swapped it out for a like-new one from e-bay and she fired up!
I took her out for her first ride since 2006 today (last registered in '01) and it was bogging real bad for about 5 blocks... and then out of nowhere I get this huge rush of power; I guess it took a while for one of the injectors to come back on line. I'm glad I wasn't mid-corner!

Anyway, the ride is so much diferent from my 929. I'm still getting use to it but so farr its a blast!

Re: Help...RC starting problem

Newest update... The new fuel pump worked great... only the bike would run well for only a short time and then start to load up and run rich. This got progressivly worse until I realized it was not going to 'fix' itself. Ultimatly, the culprit was a $40 component with a torn rubber bladder. The fuel pressure regulator located on the fuel rail went bad and was dumping fuel into the rear cylinder causing a rich condition and poor running.
Now this thing runs realy well and I finaly see what you guys are raving about. Great bike!
