Still pondering about purchasing...

I found a pre-owned 2002 Honda RC51 at a local dealer and I need your help determining the price that I should pay. I know it's a personal matter how much one is willing to pay but please help me out.

Okay.

Specs:

Year: 2002 (I like it because it's an SP2, which means major changes from the SP1)
Make: Honda
Model: RVT1000R (RC51)
Color: Grey, Black, Red
Miles: 14,663
Price: $7,499
Modifications include: 2 into 1 Jardine exhaust, carbon fiber front fender, frame sliders, and some modifications to the license plate holder.
Flaws include: small (about nickle size) crack on the rear fairing where the exhaust mount is located, and rust inside the metal tube running down from the handlebar section because there is no cover (but when I went back to check, they have already repaired it - new one or did they sand it down? I don't know)

*I don't like the 2 into 1 exhaust system, so I am going to change that anyways (do you think I can see if they'll give me the stock exhaust or lower the price if I don't want the Jardine?)

I am thinking about offering them something like $5,500 max for "out the door." If they don't budge or go near what I'm offering, what should I ask them to "throw in." What do you guys think? Oh yeah, the RC51 sat at that dealer for over a year now (close to two if I remember correctly) and has had the same price since.

Thanks for your help.

If the tires look worn, ask them to throw on a set of new tires and brakes. That 5500 sounds about right though. Have you heard the bike run yet?
Good luck, and take your time dealing.

Re: Still pondering about purchasing...

Yeah.. the $5500 sounds right, especially in light of the fact you can still find 07 CBR1000RR for as low as $8695 at dealers. I just bought my 07 brand new CBR1000RR for $9350.

$7499 is out of the question.

Re: Still pondering about purchasing...

Thanks. You guys have boosted my self-esteem. I was scared to walk in there, small talk about the RC51, and then throw down my $2,000 drop offer.

As for the tires, they look in decent shape (not brand new). Also, no, I haven't heard it start up still. I have yet to do that.

I have another question. The 2002 RC51 has the front looks where it resembles an "eyebrow," covering over the headlights. Is it possible to change it, easily, so it'll look like the 2003 model?

This Saturday, during the anniversary sale, I'm going to walk in there and negotiate like a champ!

Again, thanks.

$7499! I think they may be smokin sumthin , its ben there for that long, then you have some leverage. They want to move that bike. they just tryin to do it for too much.

Re: Still pondering about purchasing...

I wouldn't pay anything close to that for that many miles. Get them to replace the tail section, the tires, get proton flushmounts, a new helmet and jacket (not cheap ones), then you might consider paying the 7500 out the door.

If they can't do that, I would walk away, go find one privately for sale, you'll never get as good of a deal on used bikes at a dealer, it just doesn't happen.

The only time when dealers are good for stuff like that is if you get factory financing (pretty rare on used bikes, maybe new leftovers) and they can roll some gear into the financing. Otherwise, I only go there for new bikes (which still don't financially make sense)

Re: Still pondering about purchasing...

Wow, $7500 for an 02. Thats high in any US market, but like miller said, they arent gonna move easy on price at a dealership. If your not financing it, I wouldnt even consider a dealer sale. Look locally for private sale for a better price. Some of us cant afford to out-right buy a bike and financing is the only way to get what we want. In that case, I would go to my credit union. Just what I would do. I see 02's selling in the mid 5's all day with much better mods.
Good Luck

Remember that anyone financing a used RC51 (except maybe a dealership) will only finance a certain portion of the price based on the bikes year.

Re: Still pondering about purchasing...

I bought my 2002 for $5500 off of Craigslist. It had 8500 miles on it. Granted, I put another $500 into it in the form of all new fluids/tires. The real deal-maker for me was the Arrow exhaust, undertail, and flushmount signals that were already installed. That significantly increased the value imo.

I think he was asking about the different paint jobs on the '02s and '03s.

Yep, it's pretty easy to fix, just go buy a new upper fairaing for an '03. Damn I'm good.

If you are refering to the graphics kit, you can buy it from your local Honda Dealer for about 30 bucks if it is above the clear coat. You could use a hiar drier or heat gun (careful with the heat gun) to remove the old graphic vinyl. then put the other one one using water in a spray bottle so you can move it until it is in place.

Re: Still pondering about purchasing...

Ive been looking at RC51's for 3 months now. I would not pay over $5500 regardless of mileage. The fact that bike is 5 years old is all that matters. I like these bikes but you need to keep in mind the unfortuate depreciation our bikes have. Don't try to get them to throw in anything find another one for sale. Dealerships piss me off they will straight up rape you not to mention if you buy it from the dealer then you pay the "proper" amount of sales tax etc. $7499 for an 02 Rc51 is ludacris. Sorry to be so blunt but I dont want to see anyone get screwed.

You're good but not as good as Skwyd. He posted exactly what I was looking for, the black "eyebrow" plastic cover that is apparent on all the RC51's besides the 2003 (if I'm correct).

Thanks though.

I'm going to the dealer tomorrow. So, $5,500 out the door right? Including all the taxes (about 6.55%) and fees (license, registration, etc...)?

Thanks

If they will sell it to you for $5,500 out the door taxes title fees etc included that would be cool. If they say no I would talk to the sales manager and leave him your contact info. You can also try periodic phone calls to the sales manager asking him if the bike is still there and your offer still stands. If your persistant they might just become so annoyed with you they will sell it to you so you stop calling or showing up or they could just say no and you find another bike to spend your hard earned money on

There is not a sticker on the nose of the 2003, or the 2002. The black number plate (it's made to look like one anyways, the black also extends out below the headlights too) is painted on. So, yes you can get the decal kit, it comes in a bottle labeled " Honda Flat Black Paint". The only stickers on the ('02 or '03) RC are as follows: The little "HONDA" on the windscreen and tail; the "1000R"s on either side of the tail; the silver or black stickers on the seat cowl; the "RC-51"s on the front cowl; the wing stuff on the side panels; and the silver/red/black stickers where the side panels meet the upper cowl (they make the transition from silver to red, because the front cowl is painted silver, and the lower cowl is red, and they line up at a different angle than the red/silver boundary on the tank). There is also the idiot stickers on the tank, and the vin sticker on the right hand frame rail (I believe the vin stickers were only on certain years).

The '00-'02 and '03 have different part numbers for the front cowl also (and no, it's not different because of the change to SP-2 in 2002 either).
00'-'02 part#: 64230-MCF-670ZB
'03 only part#: 64230-MCF-A30ZA

The contours on the nose around the intake snorkel make it impossibly hard to justify putting a decal on there. I'm sure you could do it with a heat gun and some patience, but papa-honda thought otherwise.

Ummm, yeah, that's not a plastic cover, read above. I assume that you are talking about the differences seen here:2003 2002, And not some difference in the actual headlights from '02 to '03 models, because they are the same.

It's not a sticker either, try and pull it off, you will be very disappointed. Or try it next time you go look at the bike, the dealer might be very disappointed. If you still don't believe me, call the honda dealer and ask for the decal, or just look here: MRCYCLES They have an online oem parts catalog (and the best prices I've seen on the web for oem stuff). You can also look up the price of a new 2003 upper cowl ($356 btw)

There you go fellows Sorry I had to break it down Barney Style for you

did they give you a tracking number? The anticipation is killing me

I wasn't trying to be an ass or anything, I just don't like seeing people get bad info. Especially in cases like this where he might have been put under the impression that it's an easy fix to do what he wanted, and possibly could have messed his ride up.

To the op: if you want to do it, you can always sell your front cowl on eGay, that will help with the cost of another one. If you get a used '03 front cowl, you might just break even. Or just post up a thread asking if anybody wants to swap, somebody might like the big number plate.

I picked up my 02 with 6600 miles on it for $5500. It needed new rubber and all the fluids changed out. I would have gone just a bit more to $5800 because the cosmetics were A1 and it was pure stock, stock, stock. It isn't now. Love the bike, what a dragon slayer.
